Formed in 1985, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones started playing in Boston clubs in the mid-1980s. After a brief period of inactivity due to the schooling commitments of its members, they reformed and released their album Devil's Night Out on Taang! Records. The Bosstones toured relentlessly throughout the 1990s, playing hundreds of shows a year, releasing albums and spinning off the popular rock radio hit "Someday I Suppose". They were eventually signed to Mercury Records. The band appeared in the movie Clueless. In 1997, the success of their single "The Impression That I Get" and its follow up, "The Rascal King" earned them mainstream recognition. In 2000 they put out their critically acclaimed disk Pay Attention. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones released their last album on Side One Dummy Records. They officially went on hiatus in 2003, citing too much time on the road and desire to branch out and do different things. In 2007, the Bosstones announced that they were reforming. They played their 10th Hometown Throwdown in Boston and released a new album, Medium Rare, which consists of rare B-sides, and 3 new songs, including the single, "Don't Worry Desmond Dekker".
The band announced their split in early 2022.
The Day He Didn't Die

That day he knew what he was up to
He had this look in his eye
How could I
Forget
There's no way
I could forget him, or ever forget the day
It was the day after Christmas in his living room and he died
On that day
In his house
With his wife
Still I won't forget the day before the last day of his life
Oh, I really miss him, he would have loved this, I hope he can hear me
I really miss him, he would have loved this, I hope he can hear me
And how I loved how he lived, how he was loved and admired
A knack, a certain flare for life, and how he had it wired
He'd never give up, he'd never give in, he had a wonderful way of living
There's not been a day, one hasn't gone by
When I don't think about the day he didn't die
Oh, I really miss him, he would have loved this, I hope he can hear me
I really miss him, he would have loved this, I hope he can hear me
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones's song "The Day He Didn't Die" is a poignant tribute to a beloved individual who has passed away. The lyrics describe the day before this person's death, when they seemed to have a newfound sense of purpose in their eyes. The singer cannot forget this day, even when the day after was filled with tragedy. The person in question died on the day after Christmas in their own home with their spouse. Despite the sadness, the singer cannot forget the day before the last day of the person's life.
The song goes on to describe the admiration the singer had for this person's approach to life. They had a certain "flare for life," never giving up or giving in. The singer thinks about this person every day, unable to forget the day he didn't die. The repetition of the lines "I really miss him, he would have loved this, I hope he can hear me" emphasizes the singer's longing for this person to still be present and able to experience life's joys with them.
