The band became famous in the UK in 1995 when they released a cover version of Oasis' hit song "Wonderwall". Flowers had been recruited by BBC Radio 1 DJ Kevin Greening to cover the 'Hits of 95' for Greening's Saturday show; "Wonderwall" was his first week's project. Chris Evans heard the song and made it 'single of the week' on his Radio 1 breakfast show, telling listeners that this was the original version of the song. The single, issued by London Records under the name The Mike Flowers Pops, was released while the Oasis original was still in the UK Singles Chart, and itself reached the Top 10. Flowers' version peaked at number 2 in the Christmas 1995 chart, beaten to the number 1 spot by Michael Jackson's "Earth Song". Oasis had previously refused to let other novelty acts parody the song, but were said to have enjoyed Flowers' tape so much that they allowed the group to cut it . The B-side of the single featured the songs "Son of God" and "Theme From Memory Man".
Following the success of "Wonderwall", The Mike Flowers Pops toured festivals in Europe as well as British universities. At the end of 1996 they toured Britain with Gary Glitter on his last 'Who's in the Gang' tour. They played large venues including Wembley Arena and Birmingham NEC. A cover version of The Doors' "Light My Fire" also reached the Top 40 of the UK chart.

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
The Mike Flowers Pops's song "Light My Fire" is a cover of the classic song by The Doors, written by Jim Morrison. The lyrics suggest a call to action to a potential lover, encouraging them to "light my fire." The singer acknowledges that they would be lying if they said they couldn't get much higher, implying that they are ready for an intense experience with their potential partner. The second verse implies a sense of urgency, suggesting that there is no time to hesitate and that they should take action now. The line "our love become a funeral pyre" suggests a potential risk, but the singer is still willing to take it. Overall, the song expresses a desire for passion and excitement in a relationship.
Interestingly, The Mike Flowers Pops is a parody band, famous for their lounge-style covers of popular songs. They are known for their humorous and kitschy approach to music and often incorporate elements of comedy into their performances. Their version of "Light My Fire" is a perfect example of this, with its cheesy lounge sound and over-the-top vocals. Despite being a parody, the band's version of the song was a commercial success in the UK, reaching number 2 in the charts.

At first it can appear to be a spoof, but when you look closer, this is a very well worked piece of music. Being a Doors fan, it seemed like a mocking of the number, but if one takes the time to really watch the musicvideo, one will see it as a real good number. Very professional.

Agree entirely. The Doors wrote such memorable songs, that they could have easily been covered by a crooner. Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ is their greatest cover.

@Kevin Knox I think you've been confused by Mae West's legendary cover of Light My Fire. She was not a crooner though, she was a crone!

@Ken Lieck Hi Ken. Not heard it before. I'll check that one. Thanks.

I was only 4 in 1968 but songs like Happy Together & Windy must’ve laid the foundation for my love of good Pop tunes in spite of hating chart music if you know what I mean. 👍
