Cold Cold Heart
The Mills Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I tried so hard, my dear, to show
That you're my every dream
Yet you're afraid each thing I do
Is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past
Keeps us so far apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind
And melt your cold, cold heart

Another love before my time
Made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now
For things I didn't do
In anger unkind words are said
That make the teardrops start
Why can't I free your doubtful mind
And melt your cold, cold heart

You'll never know how much it hurts
To see you sit and cry
You know you need and want my love
Yet you're afraid to try
Why do you run and hide from lies
To try, it just ain't smart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind
And melt your cold, cold heart

There was a time when I believed
That you belonged to me
But now I know your heart
Is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you
The more we drift apart

Why can't I free your doubtful mind
And melt your cold, cold heart

Overall Meaning

This song is a classic country ballad about a man trying to win back the love of a woman who has been hurt in the past. The opening lines reveal the dilemma of the singer as he tells his lover that he has tried hard to show that she is his every dream, but she is afraid of his every good deed, considering it to be an evil scheme to trick her. The reason for her doubt is a painful memory from her lonesome past that separates them emotionally. The man implores her to believe in him and his profession of love, hoping that she would allow him to "melt her cold, cold heart."

In the second verse, the man explains that he isn't responsible for the hurt that his lover has experienced before their relationship, and he's paying the price for someone else's mistakes. He feels the sting of her unkind words and the tears that flow when they argue, wishing he could "free her doubtful mind" and show her how sincere his love is. Being a compassionate lover, he admits that it hurts him to see her cry and suffer in silence, knowing very well that he could offer her the love she needs. The song ends with the singer acknowledging that he has lost his lover's heart to a memory that he cannot compete with, feeling more distant as he tries harder to care more for her.
