Don't Blame Me
The Mills Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Years we've been together
Seems we can't get along,
No matter what I do
I don't appeal to you
Makes no difference whether
I am right or wrong
If we can't be sweethearts
This much you can do

Please don't talk about me when I'm gone
Oh, Honey, though our friendship ceases from now on
And listen, if you can't say anything real nice
It's better not to talk at all, that's my advice
We're parting, you go your way, I'll go mine
It's best that we do
Here's a kiss, I hope that this brings lots of luck to you
Makes no difference how I carry on

Just remember
Please don't talk about me when I'm gone.

Overall Meaning

The Mills Brothers's song "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" is a melancholic plea from the singer to the person he has been together with for years, who he can't seem to get along with despite his efforts. He acknowledges that he doesn't appeal to the other person, regardless of whether he is right or wrong. Therefore, he decides to end their relationship as friends and embarks on his own journey, and he hopes this will bring a lot of luck to his former partner. However, he pleads that the other person should not speak ill of him or say anything that isn't kind when he is gone because their departure should be amicable despite the difficulties they've encountered in their relationship.

The depiction in this song is of a person who is victimized by the relationship's failure, although he's tried to give his all. He acknowledges that both of them may have played a part in their relationship's failure, but he's tired of trying, and he wants to move forward without any ill will. The singer has a pessimistic view of the future, believing that no matter how he carries on, his partner will always find a fault in him. The plea to not talk badly about him when he is gone is a sign of a broken heart and a desire to leave without offending the other person.

Having just graduated high school in '58 their melodies were tops.. Nothing could outshine them. Today's music can't compare.

@gaitachi3256

Graduated in 1958? I just recently passed my Junior year at high school. I agree. Today's music is just something that should not be public 😕 I always say someone just has to eat all that new music. Not me. I understand the beauty behind this old but true music. 💙

This is a singing group at its finest the temptations before the temptations the ink spots imitated their sound n the first African American group to have a radio show true trailblazer. Ps love Donald's voice he has the settle tenor like Sinatra but more smooth.

@donk4926

Their albums were played often during my childhood in South Africa in 1960;s to 1970's. Never got to see them live but their recording were enough for our family. Much appreciated and loved.
Pity the newer generations do not listen to these songs and harmonious vocals. So soothing.
