I Can
The Mills Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(I can't stop loving you)
I've made up my mind
To live in memory of the lonesome times
(I can't stop wanting you)
It's useless to say
So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday
(Dreams of yesterday)
Those happy hours that we once knew
Though long ago, they still make me blue
They say that time heals a broken heart
But time has stood still since we've been apart

(I can't stop loving you)
I've made up my mind
To live in memories of the lonesome times
(I can't stop wanting you)
It's useless to say
So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday

(Those happy hours)
(That we once knew)
(Though long ago)
(Still make me blue)
Still make me blue
(They say that time)
(Heals a broken heart)
(But time has stood still)
Time has stood still
(Since we've been apart)

(I can't stop loving you)
I said I made up my mind
To live in memory of the lonesome times
Sing a song, children
(I can't stop wanting you)
It's useless to say

So I'll just live my life of dreams of yesterday
(Of yesterday)

Overall Meaning

The Mills Brothers's song "I Can't Stop Loving You" is a classic love song that expresses the pain of lost love. The lyrics suggest that the singer is unable to let go of the memories of their past relationship and has resigned themselves to living in those memories. The first verse conveys the singer's decision to live in memory of the lonesome times, as they have made up their mind to do so. The next verse indicates that the singer still wants their former partner, but acknowledges that it's useless to express this feeling. Instead, they will continue to live in dreams of yesterday.

The chorus repeats the idea that memories of the past are all the singer has left, despite the pain it brings. The bridge speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak; despite the idea that time heals all wounds, in this case, time has stood still since the singer's relationship ended. The final verse reiterates the singer's acceptance of living in the past and the futility of trying to move on, as they sing "I'll just live my life of dreams of yesterday". The song's melody is mournful and melancholy, adding to the emotional weight of the lyrics.

I just so love the sound of pops and scratches on an old 78rpm record!

Cynthia Pickett

I always knew this was one of their songs; I remember hearing Leon Redbone (an obvious big fan) singing this in the early days of "Saturday Night Live". They really sound like a real band here.

Eileen Morrison

this is wonderful to hear. Wish I still had the 78 rpms I inherited.

So soothing.

I've never seen a "Lucky" label, with the notation "Brunswick Recording" at the top, taking the place of Columbia's original "Electrical Recording" slogan.

radiobob805
