During their nineteen year run on the American music charts, The Miracles charted over fifty hits and recorded in the genres of doo wop, soul, disco, and R&B. Twenty-six Miracles songs reached the Top Ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including four R&B number ones. Let's make this clear once & for all to acknowledge. This is Smokey's song. And because he wrote it from his own experience his voice is the only one that matters in expression & emotion. Everyone else is just doing a cover of the song, no matter how well, good, or great anyone thinks those other versions are. Smokey wrote and recorded this song somewhat as a disposable song never intended for airplay as it was a b-side selection for Shop Around, his first million seller. The song, written in 1959, was recorded at a time when Motown operated on a shoe string budget. If you listen carefully, you'll hear there's only a basic rhythm band accompanying the vocals. By the time the Jackson 5 recorded it in 1969, Motown was a $100 million dollar company(source: Black Enterprise) able to afford the best musicians, arrangers, and recording technology in the industry. But the ironic thing about this song was it was the flip side of Smokey's first million seller and also the flip side of the Jackson 5's first million seller, I want You Back. Of all Motown Songs including My Girl, also written by Smokey, this song has stood the the test of time and has transcended the baby boomer era into generation x and also into the Milleneals. Smokey is an absolute genius blessed by God when it comes to song writing.

I love this song. I have the original album which Smokey autographed for me after a concert. I appreciate the time you put into posting the lyrics, but you probably got them off of one of those lyrics websites and they were probably using somebody's cover version. So there are lots of little mistakes. There was no internet, there was no You Tube, there was no 'mass communication' for that matter. Michael sang the song great, Smokey sang it great--and, he wrote it. Could be that I was just in my teenage years and me and all my friends just thought the world of smokey robinson (i still do). But no one can beat him singing who's loving you. Well no one can beat him singing anything as far as I'm concerned. Michael jackson sang it pretty good. But Smokey!!!!

Dang it, I still like the Jackson 5 cover better. I also like the Beatles' cover of "You Really Got A Hold On Me" better than the original too. I think it's because I heard the covers first.

Manuel Loya Doesn't mean it was better. Of course I heard Smokey version first. LOL, let just agree to differ. When I hear Michael's version...I still hear a child singing. I was an adult back then. :)

You could make a case for the J-5 as the better version, but Lennon's pedestrian vocals on "You Really Got a Hold on Me" don't stand up to The Miracles. For a great Beatles Motown cover, listen to their version of Barret Strong's "Money".

I don' understand why I see credit for this wonderful song so often attributed to Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson??? This is SMOKEY ROBINSON'S Song, which he sang with the Miracles all the way back in 1960. Now if those attributing this song to Michael Jackson just 'cause he covered the song, could just do their homework and give credit where credit is due. Smokey, this is your Song, and, you're still Smoking after all this time.

@06kkid i disagree.nobody can copy smokey's version,and no one can copy michael's version.they may have tried copying michaels becoz it was more popular,but they only tried that doesnt mean they were successful.

To me, The MIRACLES original version of WHO'S LOVIN' YOU is by FAR. the BEST*. Alternate cover versions by The Temptations, J-5, En Vogue, Terrence Trent-D'arby Lauren Hill, ETC. CAN'T TOUCH IT . Other artists, particularly MICHAEL and EN VOGUE, tried to use this song as a showcase for riffs and vocal acrobatics. But, in the PROCESS of doing that (being show-offs), they lost the WHOLE POINT of the song. This is a SAD, REMORSEFUL SONG sung by a HEARTBROKEN MAN. A MAN.... (not a pre pubescent KID)...who caused hurt, and is now experiencing it BACK,as payment for his own actions. It's a song that clearly conveys a MESSAGE: "You Never Know Just WHAT you've GOT...UNTIL YOU LOSE IT". NO SOLO ARTIST...and NO OTHER GROUP, conveyed those feelings BETTER than *Smokey, Bobby,Claudette,Ronnie,Pete, and Marv....The Miraculous MIRACLES!!!
P.S. : ANYBODY can sing somebody ELSE'S song. It happens in KARAOKE BARS every DAY !!! It's a tribute to the greatness of the MIRACLES' ORIGINAL that so many OTHER artists were emotionally moved to COVER it. That's a tribute to *THE MIRACLES*....not *THEM*.
