So simple, the 3 dudes effectively gave $25 to the hotel and $2 to the bellboy = $27, which matches the $9 each. Nothing is "missing". The $30 they originally gave the hotel is replaced with $25 when the hotel gives back $5, but since the 3 dudes didn't get the full $5 back (they only got $1 each back), and the bellboy kept $2, all the money is easily accounted for. $30 - $5 = $25. $25 + $2 = $27. Adjust the $30 the hotel got down to $25 (after the $5 refund), and this problem becomes trivial.

Thanks for the video! Here is how I would explain it: you don't add the 2 dollars to the 27 dollars, you subtract them and get 25 dollars which is the new price for the stay. It would make no sense to subtract 3 dollars but add two dollars, since all five dollars need be subtracted from the the initial price.

The "hotel" is not $30/night...the "room" is. They want to share/economize on a room designed to accommodate two. They're charged the usual $30, but after consideration of how crowded the room will be with 3 instead of 2, the manager decides to refund $5. That's how I've been telling this riddle for about 40 years. The simpler solution: the two dollar tip gets subtracted--not added--to the twenty-seven leaving twenty-five, which is what the hotel got paid in the end---no imbalance there. n.b.--Accountants (I'm not one) are bored with this puzzle, they "get it" instantly.

@Harshita Aarya there are 30 dollars in total. The 27 they paid and the 3 they kept. The 2 dollars is included in the 27. You have to add the 27 they paid to the 3 they have to get the answer of 30 dollars.

Each guest spent $9. That's a $27 dollar debit. The bellboy got $2. That's a $2 credit. You don't add debits and credits - you balance then, which is to say subtract. We are left with an unblalanced $25 dollars which, of course, is what the hotel got for the room.

The trick part of the question comes from priming the listener with "so you have $27 paid, plus the $2 in the bellboy's pocket". That $2 is already counted in the $27 paid, so adding an extra $2 throws the math off. The correct conclusion is "So you have $27 paid, $25 went to the room and $2 went to the bellboy, and each guest still has their $1 refund"

Simple, kind of. Look at the actual cash, the actual notes - The hotel has $25 (actual cash) the bell boy has $2 (actual cash) and the guys have $3 (actual cash) That's the breakdown of the actual $30. You cannot add the $2 to the $27 because it is already included ($27 = the hotel's $25 and the bell boy's $2)

Well first off, the $27 already includes the bellboy's tip. The three missing dollars are in the possession of the guests who received them from the hotel after overpaying.

In your initial solution you added the $2 to the $27, but if you had subtracted the $2 from the $27 you would have gotten the correct answer $25...the cost of the room ..🎉

The 2 dollars is taken from the friends not the hotel bill. $25=3*$9-2. They paid $27 for a $25 room, and the bellboy pocketed the remaining $2.

Ok, please help.. the way I see it, they paid 8.3333333333 dollars each (one third of the 25 for the room) plus one third of the two dollars the bell boy took(.6666666667) that equals 9 dollars/ea so how?

After much deliberation, I think then you add the three dollars they got back and get 30? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

@Ben Hoskins First off, you need to remove the second D in the last name. It can be difficult, but my last name is definitely not shared with the motorcycle. The math works like this. 10+10+10=25+5. Bellboy returns 3 of these 5, so you remove 3 from each side one per friend,, and 3 of the 5 overcharged dollars. 9+9+9=25+2. There is no loss of cash, as the 3 dollars are removed from both sides of the equation. The mistake is that adding the dollars the bellboy has to the dollars the friends now have is adding numbers from two different sides of the equation. The dollars the bellboy has would be subtracted from the money the friends have, not added to it, and you would get the new cost of the room, $25 dollars, not the old cost $30. There is no missing dollar.

This just shows us how we use math in the wrong situations, because it doesn’t make sense that everyone paid 9 and that multiplied by 3 gives us 27 if the total was 30, I understand the solution I’m just saying that we shouldn’t use the multiplication in this problem

They $9 dollar figure is how much they spent. The bell boys 2$ figure is how much he has. The total expenditure and how much they have all add up. Expenditure figures: 9 for each customer and 3 for the bellboy= 30 dollars spend. How much each have? Each customer has 1, bell boy has 2 and owner has 25 3+2+25= 30

They get u stuck and trick u on the $9 next to each of the 3 friends. Along with the previous. Total bill amount $30 which becomes irrelevant once they refund the $5

If you think twice, didn't had 10 euros each at the beginning, they had -10, because they basically lost 10 euros... by adding 1 euro to each equals that each has -9 euros and after that adding the "tip" (2 euros) equals -25...

Actually the room cost them 8.333 per person. 3 Into $25. Pluse they got back a dollar so each had 9.333 involved. for $27.99 pluse the $2.00 for the tip 29.99 partial left over to split three ways.

The way I found out is you don't look at how much you pay. You look at how much you get back and then add that to the price you paid.. You each pay $10 so that equals $30. The real prize is $25 so you get back $1 each which puts you at $3 plus the amount of the tip which is $2 and add that to the price to see that no money is missing..

All you have done is explain an alternative calculation and not really solved the fallacy that is committed in the first calculation.

To put simply the answer is the mistake happens when the $2 is added to the $27 instead it should be subtracted, just as the $3 was subtracted to give you $27

"A young person wants to buy a $97 jacket. So, he borrows $50 from their dad and $50 from their mom. Now he has the $100 to buy the jacket and therefore he owes each one of his parents $50.

He buys the jacket and now he has $3 left. He decided so keep $1 for himself and return $1 to dad and $1 to mom. He now has $1 and owes $49 to their dad and $49 to their mom.

WHOA! It's an improper conversion from a rate to a charge. $30 is the charge....the rate for 3 is $10. When $25 is the charge the rate becomes $8.33. Split the $5 charge into: the $2 "tip" ( rate is $.67)....and $3 refunded (rate is $1). Ergo: $8.33 plus $.67 plus $1=$10 rate.

If you get 30 bills and put aside 27$ that was actually paid between 3 people and give two dollars to the bell boy for tip. The hotel will have an extra dollar left in its pot. So hotel actually has the missing dollar.

It's a trick question to say 9+9+9+2 = 29, because the 2 that the bellboy got is already included in the amount paid by the guests.

The guests paid 9 dolars each. This 27 dollars is broken down as the 25 for the cost of the rooms and the 2 dollar tip for the bellboy. Simple :)

It's cause you're treating negatives like they were positives, right? The money of the friends minus the refund they were given and the amount the dude kept should always equal twenty five (30 - 3 -2 = 25) but adding them together should not always equal thirty dollars. Like if there were four friends (and they didn't have change to break a whole dollar) it would be (30 - 4 + 1 = 27).

The video didn’t really explain it well. The point is you should add the original 27 to the bellhops $2 because its already included in the “$9paid”. Then $9 paid x3 =27 + the $3 the guests split... 27+3=30. It’s just your brain playing a trick

I think the correct way to explain this is more along the lines of the three guys think they paid $9 each, which is false. They were led to believe this, therfore this information can't be used in the equation. Let's be honest the tip wasn't a tip it was taken without permission aka stolen. They paid $25 total if you must divide that by 3 people and they paid $8.3333333333333333333333333_ each. But they wouldn't know that because part of their refund was stolen. So its confusing when we are given two different facts from two different perspectives one of them being false and combining those unrelatedand false numbers with actual numbers into an unsolvable equation is the trick on us. Unless you start use facts not false numbers from the assuming minds of the customers.

Luna Space You're doing it wrong. 25$ were the money that were spent for the hotel's room. To that we should add 2$, that are the money that were taken by the waiter. In total they spent 27$, and 3$ were given back. 30$-3$=27$
