The band's original lineup consisted of Wayne Hussey (vocals, guitar), Craig Adams (bass), Simon Hinckler (guitar) and Mick Brown (drums). Hussey and Adams were formerly members of The Sisters of Mercy, Mick Brown was a former member of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and Hickler was a former member of Artery and Pulp. The Mission attracted a faithful following band of fans, known a 'Eskimos'. Gigs typically had an energetic mosh pit (prior to the term being coined) sustained by a lot of Eskimos.

Stay With Me

Spinning rooms in cities of rust
I'm stranded, struck out on this line
Of smoke and fire and steel and wire
And glass and spire and dust
On to the floor at dawn with lips taught and drawn
Sleepless nights I've spent with angels heaven sent
Stay with me, lay with me, take me deep inside
Lay with me, stay with me, lay with me
Stay, with me
Stay, with me
Born of the sign of air and the twins
Speak of days and another place
I wander as the gypsy under a beckoning moon
Speak of time and another face
A wayward and languid cry a fleeting and furtive sigh
From the cradle to the grave a love to desire and crave
Stay with me, lay with me, lay down by my side
Stay with me, lay with me, take me deep inside
Lay with me, stay with me, lay with me
Stay, with me
Stay, with me
I'll laugh for you, and I'll dance for you
But don't ask me to shed any tears when I have to go
You are a joy and a pleasure to love and to hold
Your promise is as pure as the driven snow
Passing ships in the night a touch distraught and light
Eyes that brightly shine, your love tonight is mine
Stay with me, lay with me, lay down by my side
Stay with me, lay with me, take me deep inside
Lay with me, stay with me, lay with me
Stay, with me
Stay, with me
The Mission's song "Stay With Me" is a ballad about lost love and the yearning for a past lover's presence. The first stanza describes the singer's feelings of being stranded, spinning in rooms of rust, smoke, fire, steel, wire, glass, spire, and dust. The singer has been sleepless, spending his time with heavenly angels, but still feeling incomplete and empty. The chorus repeats the request for the lost love to stay and lay with him, giving him the deep connection he craves to fill the void.
The second stanza goes into more depth about the singer's background and his wanderlust. Born under the sign of air and the twins, he speaks of days and another place, searching for something that's always just out of reach. He is a wayward and languid cry, but he still desires true love that will sustain him from the cradle to the grave. The final stanza is an acknowledgement of the joy and pleasure the lover brought, but also a resigned acceptance that they will never shed tears for each other.
Overall, "Stay With Me" is a moving and emotional song about lost love, longing, and the search for deeper meaning in one's life.
