Hark! the Herald Angels Sing
The Mistletoe Players Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled."
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of the favored one.

Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see,
Hail, th'incarnate Deity,
Pleased, as man, with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!

Hail! the heaven-born
Prince of peace!
Hail! the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the son of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!"

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" pays tribute to the birth of Jesus Christ, as herald angels announce His arrival to a group of shepherds in the fields surrounding Bethlehem. They declare that Jesus is the Prince of Peace who will reconcile humanity and God and bring mercy and hope to mankind. The chorus proclaims the glory of the newborn King, and is an invitation to all people to join in the celebration of his birth.

In the second stanza, the text focuses on Jesus as the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary. The lyrics describe Jesus as the Lord of all creation, who came to earth to reveal himself to mankind. The chorus is repeated to invite all people to celebrate Jesus' birth, recognizing him as God's chosen one.

The final verse of the song highlights Jesus' role as the "Prince of Peace" and "Son of Righteousness." He brings salvation to all people and lifts them out of darkness, freeing them from the fear of death. The lyrics describe Jesus' birth and death as a gift, offered to all humanity to save them from sin and death. The chorus is repeated once more, inviting all people to celebrate Jesus' birth and recognize him as the "new-born King."
