Nights In White Satin
The Mkoody Blues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Gazing at people
Some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through
They can't understand
Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end

And I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore

Yes I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
Yes I love you
Yes I love you
Oh, how I love you
Oh, how I love you
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white

But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

Overall Meaning

The song "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues is a beautiful and haunting love song. The lyrics describe the singer's love for someone, though they are unsure of what the truth is. The repeated refrain, "Nights in white satin, never reaching the end, letters I've written, never meaning to send," suggests a sense of unfulfilled longing and sadness. The singer is gazing at other people who seem happy, but they cannot understand what the singer is going through. The final two stanzas of the song take a darker turn, describing people in various stages of life and lamenting over the passage of time. The "cold hearted orb that rules the night" suggests the inevitability of death.

The song's iconic opening is a mellotron solo recorded at half-speed and then played back at full speed. The song's composition was influenced by classical music, particularly the work of Rachmaninoff. "Nights in White Satin" was first released in 1967, but it did not become a hit until it was re-released in 1972. The song has been covered by numerous artists, including Elkie Brooks, Il Divo, and Tina Arena. "Nights in White Satin" was ranked at number 36 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

I'm 70 years old now and this song still overwhelms me with emotion. I always get goosebumps and will always remember the joys of playing the album over and over and over and over..... It was one of the first exposures to orchestral music for me back then. "Band member Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19 while touring in Belgium and titled the song after a girlfriend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. The song itself was a tale of a yearning love from afar, which leads many aficionados to term it as a tale of unrequited love endured by Hayward."

I was and still there. Unlike today's so-called music, you can hear the words, you can feel the words, you can be there... Carry on young folks, carry on.
