Don't Judge This Book
The Moffatts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If they only knew
How I felt inside
Maybe they'd understand
If they only knew
What I could do
Maybe they'd understand

Just give me a chance
and I'll prove it to you
There's so much I can do
Don't judge this book by its cover
I just look different than you

We've all got our talents
We're not all the same
I wish they'd understand
If they'd look past this cover
the story begins
Maybe they'd understand

Just give me a chance
and I'll prove it to you
There's so much I can do
Don't judge this book by its cover
I just look different than you

It's not the clothes I wear
Or the color of my hair
I've got the will and I've got the heart
I just wish someone would care

Just give me a chance
and I'll prove it to you
There's so much I can do

Don't judge this book by its cover
I just look different than you (repeated)

Overall Meaning

The Moffatts's song "Don't Judge This Book" is a plea to not make assumptions about someone based on their appearance. The lyrics emphasize the idea that everyone has their own unique talents and qualities that may not be immediately apparent. The singer of the song is asking for a chance to prove themselves, to show what they are capable of beyond their physical appearance.

The chorus "Don't judge this book by its cover, I just look different than you" reinforces the idea that people should not be judged based on their outward appearance. The song stresses that there is more to a person than what meets the eye, and that they should be given a chance to show who they truly are.

The lyrics also touch on the idea that it is frustrating when people don't take the time to look past the surface and see what someone is truly capable of. The singer wishes that others would look beyond their appearance and see the potential within them.

Overall, "Don't Judge This Book" is a powerful message to not make assumptions about others based on what they look like. It encourages people to be open-minded and to see the potential in everyone.

This song is goddamn amazing! I use to have a copy of The Moffatts's self titled album on cassette. It was a Christmas gift I received from my grandmother. I received the cassette in 1997. I just turned 7 years old on Christmas of that year when I received the tape. This song brings back so many memories. I'm surprised my local record store sells the CD version of this album used. I'm thinking about purchasing a copy since Spotify, Itunes, and most of the streaming services do not have this release on their platforms! I am a metal head, and hip hop fan. I'm not ashamed to say that I use to listen to the Moffatts self titled album throughout 1998, especially when I was in kintergarden in early 1998. Excuse my language here. But this song is f**king badass, no matter what! It's the shiznit! This album was my guilty pleasure from back in the day. Lol. I highly recommend anyone whose a fan of country music, should check out this band!
