Maybe You Are
The Mojos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They met when he was in a hospital
He whispered "I ain't got no heart" into the room
She said "I'll make you smile again" and made an airplane
Out of some pretty words put in a spoon
He said "I'll never see again
My eyes are sorta twisted inwards, deep into my throat"
She said "Don't worry, babe, I'll open up your jam
I'll open up my pretty self" and she lay down on his road

She said "How do you know? Maybe you are"
Said "How do you know? Maybe you are"
Said "How do you know-oh? Maybe you are-are-are-are-are"
"Maybe you are-are-are-are-are"
"Maybe you are"
"Maybe you are"
"Maybe you are"

She peeled his skin away, so every day he'd cry
And in those tears he'd lie to find some peace
She'd break from all his words, but she was made of mercury
She'd come together later piece by piece
And it became a game they played under the blankets
In the bed, pretending she was small and he was big
She became so small, he could lift her, body and heart and all
He held her up naked, she was just his fig
Just his fig

Said "How do you know? Maybe you are"
Said "How do you know-oh? Maybe you are"
Said "How do you know-oh? Maybe you are-are-are-are-are"
"Maybe you are-are-are-are-are"
"Maybe you are"
"Maybe you are"
"Maybe you are"
"Maybe you are"

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of "Maybe You Are" by The Mojos, the lyrics depict a meeting between two individuals in a hospital setting. The singer expresses a feeling of emptiness and claims to have lost his heart. However, the other person, a woman, assures him that she can bring joy back into his life. She uses metaphorical language, comparing her comforting words to an airplane made from pretty words and a spoon. The singer shares his despair, mentioning twisted eyes and feeling disconnected. The woman promises to help him overcome his struggles by offering herself selflessly.

The chorus of the song explores a sense of uncertainty. The woman questions how one can truly know oneself or others, suggesting that the singer may possess qualities and potential that he himself is unaware of. This notion is emphasized through repetition and the use of vocal layering, creating a sense of introspection and contemplation.

In the second verse, the woman takes on a more active role. She metaphorically removes the singer's protective layers, peeling away his skin, causing him to shed tears. In these tears, he finds solace and a form of healing. Despite the emotional turmoil, she remains resilient, as if made of mercury, capable of reforming and coming back together. The lyrics suggest that their relationship becomes a game played under the covers, with the woman pretending to be small and vulnerable while the singer assumes a position of strength. This dynamic allows him to feel a sense of power, as he holds her naked form, signifying his control and possession.

The chorus is repeated once more, reiterating the theme of uncertainty and self-discovery. The woman questions the singer's understanding of himself, leaving the possibility open that he may possess hidden qualities and potential that he is yet to realize. The repetition of the chorus creates a sense of ambiguity and reflection, allowing for multiple interpretations.

Overall, "Maybe You Are" delves into the complexities of relationships, emotional vulnerability, and the intricate nature of identity. The lyrics paint a picture of two individuals navigating their own personal struggles while simultaneously finding solace and connection in each other. It explores themes of self-discovery, uncertainty, and the transformative power of love and understanding.

Él dijo: "Nunca volveré a ver ...

Ella dijo: "No te preocupes bebé, abriré tu mermelada
