Tears of a Clown
The Monitors Lyrics

it's only there trying to fool the public
but when it comes down to fooling you
now honey that's quite a diff'rent subject
Don't let my glad expression
give you the wrong impression really I'm sad
Oh, sadder than sad, you're gone and I'm hurting so bad
like a clown I pretend to be glad
Now there's some sad things known to man
but ain't too much sadder than
the tears of a clown, when there's no one around
Oh yeah, baby,
Now if I appear to be carefree,
it's only to camouflage my sadness
in order to shield my pride
I try to cover this hurt with a show of gladness
But Don't let my show convince you
that I've been happy since you decided to go,
I need you so, I'm hurt and I want you to know
but for others I put on a show
Now there's some sad things known to man
but ain't too much sadder than
the tears of a clown,
when there's no one around
Just like Pagliacci did
I try to keep my sadness hid
smiling in the public eye
but in my lonely room I cry
the tears of a clown
Oh, yeah baby
Now, if there's a smile on my face
Don't let my glad expression
Give you a wrong impression
Don't let this smile I wear
Make you think that I don't care
Now there's some sad things known to man
but ain't too much sadder than
the tears of a clown, when there's no one around
The Monitors’ song “Tears of a Clown” is about a man who is putting on a facade of happiness and cheerfulness in public, but is actually deeply sad and hurting inside because of a lost love. The song starts with the man explaining that he only smiles and looks happy in order to deceive others and protect himself from criticism or pity. However, when it comes to the person he lost, he can’t keep up his pretense anymore. He misses that person so much and is so sad that even though he might still be smiling, he’s actually “sadder than sad.” He describes himself as “like a clown” who has to pretend to be cheerful, even though he’s feeling anything but.
The second verse continues with the man admitting that he still feels very sad and that he can’t be truly happy without that person. He explains that he appears carefree in public only to hide his true feelings, and to protect his own pride. He admits that he wants his lost love back desperately, and that he’s trying to put on a good show for others, but it’s all just an act. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, where he compares himself to the tragic clown Pagliacci trying to hide his sadness with a smile.
Overall, “Tears of a Clown” is a powerful and poignant song about putting on a brave face when deep down, you’re struggling with sadness and loss. It’s a song that many people can relate to, as we often feel like we have to present a happy front to the world, even when we’re struggling on the inside. The idea of the clown, who has to make others happy even when he himself is crying, is a particularly poignant and powerful metaphor.
