You and I
The Monkees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All men must have someone, have someone
Who would never take advantage
Of a love bright as the sun
Someone to understand them,
And you just may be the one

All men must have someone, have someone
Who would never take for granted
All the pleasures and the fun
Someone to stand beside them
And you just may be the one

I saw when you walked by
The love light in your eye
And I knew I must try
To win you more than just a friend,
I'm starting near the end,
And here I go again

All men must have someone, have someone
Who would never take advantage
Of a love bright as the sun
Someone to stand beside them
And you just may be the one

Someone to understand them,
And you just may be the one

Overall Meaning

The Monkees's song You Just May Be The One talks about the importance of having someone who would never take advantage of one’s love, and stand beside them through thick and thin. The lyrics indicate a sense of longing for someone who could possibly be the one for the singer. The lyrics also suggest that the singer has possibly been in relationships where they have been taken for granted or not understood, and that they believe the person they are singing about may be the one to change that.

The lyrics, “All men must have someone” suggest that the need for companionship is universal, and not just specific to one gender. The repetition of the line, “and you just may be the one” creates a sense of hope and possibility, indicating that the singer is willing to take a chance on this person who they believe could be the one for them.

The line, “I saw when you walked by, the love light in your eye” depicts the moment the singer first saw the person, implying that it was then that they felt a connection with them. The ending line “here I go again” suggests that the singer has tried this before and failed, but they are still willing to keep trying.

Overall, the lyrics of You Just May Be The One talks about universal experiences related to love and relationships, and creates a sense of hope for finding that special someone who will stand beside one through thick and thin.

The 1996-1997 reunion could’ve been so much more! It’s a shame that creative differences and egos got in the way. I bet if they knew that this run would’ve been the last one that all four of them did together, maybe they could’ve made it work. I loved the TV special they did for ABC and the Justus album. I wish I could have gone to a concert on the Reunion/Justus tour. I’m paraphrasing Davy Jones, “It’s not The Monkees until it’s four people onstage. Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork. Those ARE The Monkees.” RIP Davy, Peter and Mike.

@TheMonkeesArchives

It wasn't creative differences. Mike was terrified of the stage and the load of negative press they got in the UK would put anyone off ! He did the most he could and retreated home to his dogs and left the stress.

@@TheMonkeesArchives I guess we can't blame him. They were merciless. I've watched the UK shows and thought they were fine. What was their beef, I wonder? Just the usual British superiority?

@sm5574

Kudos to Mike and Micky for being able to concentrate with a topless woman kneeling in front of them!

@magneto7930

This album was proof that they could still make great music!

i love how peaceful davy led songs were. no matter what era there always seemed to be songs he sung that had this sense of such calmness to them. miss him and peter loads :(

Love this video love the foot work Peter does in this video he's the one who did most of the dance moves in the tv show and real in real life Micky and Peter are my favorites

2:53 “When all the others never made it through “. Choked me up. Sung by David, (2012) and picturing Peter, whom we just lost. I’m still in shock for David. I know that does not make sense but there it is. And... now... Peter. My Peter. Our Peter. The Musician’s Musician... oh, my heart...

@TheMonkeesArchives

Should have put the time point 1:58 to point out that line. Your time point is the end of the song. I am still shocked that David is gone after 7 years! It makes perfect sense. Sadly, we will lose all of our heroes in our lifetime.

@MakeThings

The Monkees Archives yes, but somewhere they’ll all sing again.
