The band was formed in 2002 by guitarists Michiel Dekker and Martijn Moes, bassist and vocalist Robin Kok and drummer Sjoerd Visch under the name Monolith. Under this name the band released their debut album The Apotheosis in 2003, although the group was also known under the name The Monolith Deathcult. In 2005, the second album The White Crematorium followed, whereupon keyboardist Carsten Altena was heard as a new member. After the album Trivmvirate was released in 2008, the album The White Crematorium was released in 2010 via Twilight Distribution as a reissue under the name The White Crematorium 2.0. After that, guitarist Moes left the band and was replaced by Ivo Hilgenkamp in 2011 before the next album Tetragrammaton followed in mid-May 2013

The Monolith Deathcult's song "Origin" is full of dark and intriguing imagery as it explores the story of human creation according to Sumerian mythology. The first stanza speaks of humanity being created by Enki, a god known for his wisdom and magic, with the permission of Anu, the god who is considered the father of the gods. The "working race" is said to have been created in the temples of SCH.RUPPAK, a place associated with sacred knowledge and mystical power.
The second stanza describes the arrival of the "Masters," who ride through the sky in chariots of thunder, radiating a blinding light that causes anyone who looks at them to die.
