Cheerio
The Monroes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Badlees, The
The Unfortunate Result Of Spare Time
The Unfunny
Just be clever for clever's sake, starin' at the ceiling into shadow-fakes
The circle-smokes in the ladies room only got you as far as the roles assumed
A glimpse of the perfect crime is just a reverie away
Whadaya say we hang there a while for expediency's sake?
And fantasize the great demise of the unfunny
Cut and dry, we'll bid good-bye to the unfunny

Their personality inspires like a five pound bag of fertilizer
Like living in a house with fifteen cats, you're unaware of the stench when a line goes flat
A glimpse of the perfect crime is just a reverie away
Whadaya say we hang there a while for expediency's sake?

And fantasize the great demise of the unfunny
Set 'em up, we'll drink a cup to the unfunny

Overall Meaning

The Monroe's song Cheerio is about a farewell to a past love. The lyrics are essentially a goodbye to a relationship that was once meaningful, but has now reached its end. The title itself is a casual way of saying goodbye to someone, and the lyrics reflect the same sense of nonchalance. The imagery used in the lyrics is striking, with the singer saying they will not linger on the past but instead will move on and find a new beginning.

The lyrics "I won't forget, I won't regret / A single thing that's been said / But it's time to leave, it's time to go / Cheerio my love, cheerio" convey a sense of longing but also a sense of finality. The goodbye is bittersweet, but necessary. The song reflects on the end of a relationship and the hope for new beginnings.

Cheerio, cheerio - bye bye
Cheerio-o, it's too late to try
Cos' I miss you in the morning
And I need you every night
Cheerio-o, cheerio - bye bye
Cheerio, cheerio - bye bye
I will never know the reason why
For a moment we were lovers
For a moment you were mine
Now we it's over cheerio bye-bye
We were running wild
A miss forgotten child
I saw you on the roof top
You're eyes were shining bright
Like a candle in the night
Was it only a game you played for fun?
Did you think you could fly?
Just a memory remains as time goes by
Cheerio, cheerio - bye bye
Cheerio-o, it's too late to try
There is nothing to forgive you
By what is wrong or what is right
Cheerio-o, cheerio - bye bye
Cheerio, cheerio - bye bye
Cheerio-o, it's too late to try
Cos' I couldn't live without you
And you couldn't take the fight
Cheerio-o, cheerio - bye bye
Cheerio, cheerio - bye bye
Cheerio-o, it's too late to try
I'm so lonely in the morning
And I miss every night
Cheerio-o, cheerio goodbye
Cheerio-o, cheerio goodbye

I played bass with Monroes band when they toured Norway twice in the 1980's and then played guitar when we did a 'Live in London' show ( Sky TV ) It was a huge shock to find out about Eivind and Lage after they had both passed - they were, not only very nice people to work for but also very good friends - Norway left a lasting impression on me and it is still one of my favourite places. It's great hearing this again after such a long time - it was always a very popular live song. I have many happy memories of the Monroes tours and of Norway as we played pretty much everywhere from Oslo to Hammerfest and most places in between. Happy Days - thank you for your post.

Sweet 👌😘💞💜💙💗

They both died from the same cause even, only a short time apart. Made for each other these two. They made a huge impact on the 80's/90's generations here in Norway. If you understand norwegian you should check out a version that was made with another newer Norwegian artist called Ravi ft Moneroes - Cheerio

@@andreix123 yep I had many happy days touring in Norway and Eivind and Lage were great to work with - unfortunately I don't know a lot of Norwegian but I do love your country :)

Totally agree! Just fantastic!!

Skriver man en megahit som denna kommer man för alltid leva kvar i lyssnarnas minnen. Ovanligt att båda bandmedlemmarna dör samma år av cancer, gud behövde kanske romantisk musik där uppe. Tack för den vackra musiken.
