Moog Cookbook released two albums in the mid-1990s featuring instrumental cover versions of alternative and classic rock tracks performed on analog synthesizers. The pair reunited to record a track for the soundtrack of the 2004 film Moog.
In 2006, the pair independently released a collection of material recorded during their earlier sessions and as part of other projects. This album is Bartell.
Their cover of the song Black Hole Sun can be heard on BBC Radio 2's Radcliffe & Maconie Show as the backing music for their feature 'Stuff & Nonsense'. Mark Radcliffe has previously used several Moog Cookbook tracks as backing music for features on his various radio shows and occasionally name-checks the band on his show.
The band's name is derived from a 1978 cookbook, Moog's Musical Eatery by Shirleigh Moog, the first wife of synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog.

Loves Jesus and America too
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too
It's long day livin' in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy 'cause I don't even miss her
Now I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
Now all the vampires walkin' through the valley
Move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts
Now I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
Now I'm free fallin' now I'm free fallin'.
I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I wanna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for a while
Now I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
Yeah, I'm free, free fallin'. Blow!
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Free fallin')
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Now I'm free)
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Free fallin')
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Free fallin')
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Now I'm free)
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Free fallin')
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
The Moog Cookbook's "Free Fallin'" is a cover of Tom Petty's iconic song. The lyrics depict the story of a good girl who loves her family, country, Elvis Presley, horses, and her boyfriend. The song's protagonist, a bad boy, confesses his lack of love and care for the good girl, and later expresses his desire to break free from his present life and glide down over Mulholland, leaving everything behind.
The lyrics evoke a feeling of longing for freedom and independence. The singer's desire to free fall into nothingness reflects his need for change and escape from his mundane life. Petty's original version is a melancholic acoustic track. However, The Moog Cookbook's cover is instrumentally different, with groovy guitar riffs, robotic vocals, and a funky synthesizer.
The Moog Cookbook is famous for their innovative use of electronic instruments and their unique take on classic rock songs. They played a vital role in the rise of electronica music in the 90s. The cover of Free Fallin' by The Moog Cookbook is a unique and refreshing take on Tom Petty's song.

This is shitpost humor 20 years ahead of its time. The off-timing robot vocals. The randomized dissonant noises. The assortment of instruments that just get worse as the song gets on. The overdramatic ending.
