Aquarius / Let The Sunshine In
The Moog Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
The Age of Aquarius
Aquarius! Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind's true liberation
Aquarius! Aquarius!

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
The Age of Aquarius
Aquarius! Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or decisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation

And the mind's true liberation
Aquarius! Aquarius!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Moog Machine's song, Aquarius, capture the hope and optimism of the counterculture movement of the 1960s. The first two lines refer to a significant astrological event in which the planet Jupiter aligns with the planet Mars while the moon is in the seventh house. Astrologers believe that when Jupiter and Mars are in alignment, it signifies a time of new beginnings, expansion, and positive change. The song's refrain repeatedly highlights that this is the "dawning of the Age of Aquarius," which is believed to be a time of spiritual and cultural transformation.

The lyrics suggest that the Age of Aquarius will be marked by harmony, understanding, and trust among people. It will be an age free of falsehoods and derisions, characterized by visions of a better world. The "mystic crystal revelation" and "mind's true liberation" signify the spiritual awakening that the counterculture movement aimed to achieve, as individuals sought to free themselves from the constraints of society and explore new forms of consciousness. The song concludes by repeating the refrain, driving home the message that the Age of Aquarius is upon us, and transformational change is possible.

I've been trying to figure how the hell Dilla EQ'd this shit so cleanly. Compared to the Beastie and Avalanches sample of the same section where they still have the drums and that sawtooth wave in their mix, somehow Dilla took all that out all whilst keeping the integrity of the sample? I've tried EQing it myself to get in his headspace but I seriously cannot figure out how to do it as clean as he did. Most people would overlook this as a simple beat that is looped but the underlying genius that goes unnoticed to most is what makes Dilla one of the greats.

This dude really was an alien.

Hey Man...I know you brought this up a while ago....but i just came across this now....So if you listen to this track you can hear how the sections Dilla sampled are panned. The Bassline runs up the center as it should. Dilla took the info on the left side for his samples and made them mono. After slowing the sample down there would be the issue of the bass being in the sample but this time faintly . So if you listen to Dillas joint you can then hear that he replayed the bass melody using his own Moog ( assuming only cause he owned one of course ) ....add the chopped break in to mask any and then mix the track as usual and its a wrap.
PEACE

fyhlox2 yeah man, I was having the same problem trying to figure out how J Dilla perfectly masked the drums and the other elememts of this song to bring out the true part in Fantastic 3, but like you said I realized that J Dilla had and Moog himself so he could play the melody a the bassline in this at the same frequency to mask it and perfectly EQ the main melody to wrap up the whole song!

Tempting, but no thanks.

@fyhlox2 good observation, i just want to point out that Dillaโ€™s flip is from 1996 or so and he didnโ€™t get the moog until 2001 - 2002.
