Somewhere
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Lyrics

Oh, there's no place like home for the holidays,
For no matter how far away you roam
When you long for the sunshine of a friendly gaze,
For the holidays - you can't beat home, sweet home
I met a man who lives in Tennessee, and he was headin' for
Pennsylvania and some homemade pumpkin pie
From Pennsylvania folks are travelin' down to Dixie's sunny shore
From Atlantic to Pacific
Gee, the traffic is terrific
Oh there's no place like home for the holidays,
'Cause no matter how far away you roam
If you want to be happy in a million ways,
For the holidays - you can't beat home, sweet home
I met a man who lives in Tennessee and he was headin' for
Pennsylvania and some homemade pumpkin pie
From Pennsylvania folks are travelin' down to Dixie's sunny shore
From Atlantic to Pacific
Gee, the traffic is terrific
Oh, there's no place like home for the holidays,
'Cause no matter how far away you roam
If you want to be happy in a million ways,
For the holidays - you can't beat home, sweet home
For the holidays - you can't beat home, sweet home

I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree
Christmas Eve'll find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

Candles in the window
Shadows painting the ceiling
Gazing at the fire glow
Feeling that gingerbread feeling
Precious moments, special people
Happy faces, I can see
Somewhere in my memory
Christmas joys all around me
Living in my memory

All of the music, all of the magic
All of the family, home here with me

Overall Meaning

The song "Home for the Holidays" talks about the feeling of longing to go back home during the holiday season, no matter where you may roam. The upbeat tune highlights the excitement of people moving from various places to reach their homes during the holidays. The song provides you with various examples, such as a man who lives in Tennessee going to Pennsylvania to have homemade pumpkin pie or people travelling from Pennsylvania down to Dixie's sunny shore. The song talks about the traffic being terrific, extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Irrespective of the miles, the difficulties, the excitement, the anticipation, and the anxiety of the journeys made, none of it can match the comfortable and familiar feeling of being home.

Additionally, the song "I'll be Home for Christmas" is another song about someone longing to be home for Christmas but ends up settling for the idea of being home even if only in their dreams. The song speaks about Christmas Eve and finding oneself where the love light gleams. The lyrics talk about hoping for snow and mistletoe and presents, the essential things that accompany the holiday festivities. The singer talks about how they would be home, even if it's only in their dreams. The song's sadness can be felt as one tries to come to terms with the fact that they might not be able to make it home physically.

Moreover, the song "Somewhere in my Memory" speaks of the magic and music of the holiday season that still plays vividly in the minds of the singer, the special people they've shared the holiday with, and the happy faces around them. It highlights the feelings that come with the holiday season, such as warmth, joy, and love. As the song ends, the idea of home remains significant, and the recurring theme of "home for the holidays" is reiterated.

There's a place for us, somewhere a place for us
peace and quiet and open air, wait for us SOMEWHERE.
There's a time for us.  Someday a time for us
Time together with time to spare, time to learn, time to care
Someday, Somewhere we'll find a new way of living
We'll find a way of forgiving --- Somewhere....Somewhere
There's a place for us. A time and a place for us.
** Hold my hand and we're half way there, hold my hand and
I'll take you there --- Somehow, Someday ---- Somewhere.

This song... so poignant for any who truly hear the words. A wish to be with someone we can't have, a wish to live a life we can't walk. Such beautiful lyrics that connect with every human being

I think this song resides in all hearts... just beautiful.

Perfect song ending to what I have always believed to be the greatest musical/movie in history - West Side Story. Oh if it only it could have been for Tony and Maria! The thing is that the entire theme behind that masterpiece, hatred for another person just because he/she has a different skin color is still very relevant today.

Another great musical dealing with racism, is South Pacific by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Look up the song "You got to be carefully taught".

Gang members have an unusually high sensitivity to variations in "whiteness" :) They do not care what the dictionary defines as "white" as opposed to "non white".

EinHarod9

Hello, I just looked this up in Wikipedia and found out that 3/4 of the population in Poerto Rico is white. Since the other gang in the musical is comprised of white members, I fail to see any animosity based on skin color, but rather on cultural background. I am a resident of an immigrant country myself, but I am not American, so would you please clarify your statement? Thank you!

You cannot fail to be so proud to be a member of such a humanitarian Church that provides succour, relief, healthcare and teaching to all faiths around the world, and the ethereal voices of arguably the finest Choir on the planet.

Susan Mae

One of my favorite all time songs. This is the first time I've heard a choir sing it and it's beautiful.

Richard Arsenault

Magnificent rendition of Bernstein and Sondheim's masterpiece in my observation. Splendid!
