Where Cedar Nouns and Adverbs Walk
The Most Serene Republic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time we meet it?s always love and wine
The trees make our bathetic talk
Where cedar nouns and adverbs walk

With beetles as the backup band
The flightless cheering in their stands
The empty swing sets hushed reprise
Makes that first language thick as spies

let's relearn every vowel and phrase
And make it better than before
Let's relearn every vowel and phrase
And make it better than before

I think you know why, what to do
Rules of it are so damn cruel
I think you know what to do
The rules of it are so damn cruel
I think you know why, what to do
The rules of it are so damn cruel

Now let's make our lips an accident
On the corner of came and went
We?ll merge in gymnastic flips, spirographs
We?ll forget what the future has

We?ll take the day off, let's take the day off
Lets' take the day off, let's take the day off

I think we all know the words
I think we all know the words
I think we all know the words
I think we all know the words

I think we all know the words
I think we all know the words
I think we all know the words
I think maybe we all know the words

I think we all know the words
I think we all know the words

I think we all know the words

Overall Meaning

The Most Serene Republic's song "Where Cedar Nouns and Adverbs Walk" is a poetic tribute to the power of language and human connection. The lyrics express the idea that every time two people meet, it is an opportunity to deepen their relationship through shared experiences and conversation. The metaphor of trees as a "backup band" to the bathetic talk of the two lovers suggests that their conversation may seem silly or unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but it is nonetheless meaningful and memorable to them. The line "Where cedar nouns and adverbs walk" further emphasizes the idea that language is alive and dynamic, with words taking on a life of their own as they are spoken and shared.

The song continues with imagery of beetles as an audience and empty swing sets as a musical accompaniment to the lovers' conversation. The line "Makes that first language thick as spies" suggests that the language spoken between the two is intimate and secretive, with a depth of meaning that may not be immediately apparent to others. The repeated refrain "Let's relearn every vowel and phrase, and make it better than before" suggests that the two lovers are constantly striving to deepen their connection through language and shared experiences.

Rarest Form

Adrian is a gem. We need to encourage him to write music publicly again. He and I locked eyes in San Francisco right before his show. I took a lot to not yell out or make motions of the fact that he was within eye-shot. TMSR was Arts & Crafts' most innovative band. Saying a lot. Fucking Broken Social Scene the lead. TMSR had way more potential.

No problem! I couldn't believe no one else had it up either. I love this band.

Probably my favorite TMSR song! But what the hell? This is the only video of this song on youtube and it only has 420 views? I don't get it. Thanks for uploading!
