Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.

Something must be done
Jaws dropping at ringside
In the blood tide
When the fireball hits
Down Indiana way
Make 'em check their guns
Smell the sulfur
When the dark vault splits
Lord of the hidden pocket knife
Tawdry dreams all come to life
Save yourselves
Save this town, save everything not nailed down
War in Ontario! Dead before the bell
Crushed hopes of the young breed
All the best bleed
All the proud boys break
Who will stand before the flood?
Who will mop up all the blood?
Who alone?
Skin, bone, steel, stone
Swim or drown
Save this town, save everything not nailed down
The Mountain Goat's song "Fire Editorial" is a commentary on the idea of destruction in the world, both physically and metaphorically. The lyrics are written in a fragmented manner, suggesting the chaos of the situations described.
The song begins with the news of two people being blinded in Detroit, with a sense of urgency that "something must be done". The following lines "jaws dropping at ringside, in the blood tide, when the fireball hits" suggests a violent event happening to a group of people, possibly in a public arena.
The second verse describes a scene of conflict "down Indiana way," with the line "make 'em check their guns." The use of the word "real" in "real tears when it's over" implies a sense of authenticity, as if the emotional turmoil is genuine. The reference to the "dark vault splits" is an enigmatic image, implying either a physical or spiritual collapse.
The last verse references "war in Ontario," where "all the best bleed, all the proud boys break." The repetition of "save this town, save everything not nailed down" suggests a desperate plea for salvation. The line "who will stand before the flood" implies that the destruction is inevitable, referencing the biblical story of Noah's Ark.
Overall, "Fire Editorial" uses fragmented language and enigmatic images to explore the idea of destruction and the consequences that arise from it.
