I love you John. I mean, I'm not gay, but I just totally completely love you.

I skipped over this side of The Mountain Goats for about a year and a half, and I'm just now getting into it. Already, I feel that this is one of the most direct and heartfelt and wonderful songs John's performed - not just of his cassette recording days, but in general. Like a lot of his other work is a lot more subdued and subtle in its meaning, if not direct with its phrasing - this is just a guy yelling about how much he loves Chino, subtlety be damned. It's beautiful and raw, and I don't think John's recorded anything quite like this since. Really, this song is just one of the greats - so firm and passionate and loud. I love it.

TheHeakes

Probably the most powerful Mountain Goats song there is. Just listen to the longing in John's voice, pining to deliver a friendly greeting to his "friends" in Chino. He knows how hard it is down there, despite the farm fresh eggs, reasonably priced tract homes, convenient access to the 60 freeway, accredited medical care down at Chino Valley Hospital, a unified school system the likes of which you won't find elsewhere, and friendly people.

They played this to open their set in Denver last night, and a bunch of people were familiar with it. That was my kind of crowd.

Matter of perspective. I lived in Chino for a while then moved one town over to Chino Hills, which despite being one of the richest communities in the state, sucks a bag of dicks. I miss Chino quite a lot.

I want this played at my funeral.

Point Three

Same.

You kidding? I love Chino. I love the cheap movie theater next to the Prehistoric Pets. I love Magnolia Junior High. I love Super Chili Burger. I even love Chino Valley Medical. Like JD says, we struggle just to get by. But the struggle's the most important part. Chino makes me feel like I'm slowly living.
