Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.

The Mountain Goats Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Shuffle on down to the park
Spent stars in the winter sky
Days of refuge in short supply
All you parasites climb abord
All you vagabonds praise the Lord
Climb to the top if I try
Long haul truckers still wide awake
Guard their pathways for Jesus' sake
All your garbage trucks to the curb
True sons of the living word
Try not to get stuck in the intake vent
Grow fat, and grow old, and go blind, and be content
All your pack dogs have your say
Let me just find my own way
Moon in the trees my guide
Walk with my jaw hinged wide
Once more unto the breach
Safe in the spots that the light can't reach
In the first verse, the lyrics set the scene of a dark and desolate place, symbolically represented by a park at night. The phrase "Spent stars in the winter sky" suggests a sense of exhaustion or depletion, reflecting the feeling that there is a lack of refuge or solace available. This line captures a sense of emptiness and the struggle to find comfort in difficult times.
The second verse introduces the idea of outsiders or outcasts coming together. The phrase "All you parasites climb aboard, all you vagabonds praise the Lord" can be interpreted as a call to embrace those who are marginalized or considered societal parasites. It suggests finding unity in shared experiences and seeking solace or guidance from a higher power.
The third verse introduces a metaphorical compost pile that represents the accumulation of life's struggles or challenges. The line "Climb to the top if I try, long haul truckers still wide awake, guard their pathways for Jesus' sake" implies that despite the difficulties faced, there is a constant need to persevere and protect oneself from negative influences. It suggests a sense of resilience and determination.
In the fourth verse, the lyrics advise against getting trapped in unhealthy circumstances or mindsets. The line "Try not to get stuck in the intake vent, grow fat, and grow old, and go blind, and be content" can be interpreted as a cautionary statement, urging listeners to avoid getting caught in negative cycles and instead find contentment by living life to the fullest.
The final verse again emphasizes the importance of finding one's own path and embracing individuality. The line "All your pack dogs have your say, let me just find my own way, moon in the trees my guide, walk with my jaw hinged wide" suggests a desire to break free from societal expectations or pressures and instead rely on personal intuition and guidance. The phrase "once more unto the breach" alludes to facing challenges head-on, even in the darkest and most inaccessible places. It encourages finding safety or comfort in those hidden spots that cannot be reached or influenced by external forces.
