Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.
Send Me An Angel
The Mountain Goats Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And it will be clear what has happened between us
In an hour or two the wind will come through the window
The wind will tear through the house
I am creeping up the staircase one step at a time
To bring you roses and chocolate
Roses and chocolate
The Mountain Goats' song Send Me An Angel is a sad ballad about a relationship coming to an end. The verses signify the aftermath of the separation, where the singer speaks about the passage of time and how it brings clarity to a relationship's complexities. The lyrics "In an hour or two the sun will rise on you And it will be clear what has happened between us," suggest that the singer is waiting for time to do its work and bring understanding to both parties involved.
Furthermore, the song's chorus depicts the singer's desperation to win back their partner. The repetition of "roses and chocolate" is a metaphor for the materialistic things the singer believes can mend the broken relationship. The chorus line, "I am creeping up the staircase one step at a time," describes the singer's attempt to win back their lover's affection in small ways.
The song's lyrics are a reminder that sometimes, relationships end despite our efforts to keep them intact. The song channels the sadness that comes with the end of a relationship and the longing to fix the situation.
