Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.

The Mountain Goats Lyrics

there were lazy kisses, hands brushing and small talk
the moon was high, your smooth face was dry, and the kudzu grew
and the stars fell on alabama
and your eyes filled up with light
and the stars fell on alabama
dry grass crinkled like paper as a breeze came in across the bay
cold clean water nearby, glimmered in your eyes
and your pistol glistened.
and the stars fell on alabama
and your eyes filled up with light
and the stars fell on alabama
but if you think i'll take a bullet for you - you're dreaming.
The Mountain Goats’ song “Stars Fell on Alabama” is a soulful ballad that captures a passionate moment shared between two lovers. The lyrics describe a romantic night where the stars seemed to fall to the ground, and the warm earth became a refuge for the two lovers. The singer describes a quiet and relaxed evening where there were soft kisses, idle chatter, and gentle touches. The moon was high in the sky, and the smooth face of the one that the singer was with was dry. The air was filled with the earthy scent of kudzu, and the stars seemed to shine as brightly as ever before.
The lyrics of this song evoke a sense of tenderness and longing with just a touch of melancholy. The singer reminisces about what seems to have been a perfect evening, but there is a tinge of sadness as they know that it will not last forever. The line “but if you think I'll take a bullet for you - you're dreaming” is a stark reminder that relationships can be fickle, and they do not always last. The last line of the song is a potent reminder that while love can be passionate and exhilarating, it can also be fragile and fleeting.
Overall, “Stars Fell on Alabama” is a poignant reminder of how love can be both enchanting and challenging. The lyrics capture the essence of a perfect night, the beauty of nature and the heartbreak that can come with the end of a relationship.
