Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.
The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton

Was a couple of guys who'd been friends since grade school
One was named Cyrus, the other was Jeff
And they practiced twice a week in Jeff's bedroom
The best ever death metal band out of Denton
Never settled on a name
But the top three contenders after weeks of debate
Jeff and Cyrus believed in their hearts
They were headed for stage lights and lear jets and fortune and fame
So in script that made prominent use of a pentagram
They stenciled their drum heads and guitars with their names
This was how Cyrus got sent to the school
Where they told him he'd never be famous
And this was why Jeff, in the letters he'd write to his friend
Helped develop a plan to get even
When you punish a person for dreaming his dream
Don't expect him to thank or forgive you
The best ever death metal band out of Denton
Will in time both outpace and outlive you
Hail Satan
Hail Satan tonight
Hail Satan
Hail, hail
"The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton" is a track off the album "All Hail West Texas" by The Mountain Goats. The song recounts the story of two friends, Jeff and Syrus, who formed a death metal band in Denton, Texas. The two believed deeply that they were going to be successful in the music industry, and they were unrelenting in their ambition. They even used a pentagram in their logo and stenciled their instruments and drumheads with their names. However, Syrus was sent to a school that told him he would never be famous, and this caused Jeff to develop a plan for revenge. The song is a cautionary tale about how some people will do whatever it takes to pursue their dreams, even if it means committing acts that might be considered wrong.
The message of the song is centred around the idea of dreaming your dream regardless of what others tell you. In this case, Jeff and Syrus had a shared passion for death metal, and they were convinced that they were going to make it big in the industry. They were driven by their dream, and their willingness to do whatever it takes to get there. This focus on ambition and perseverance in the face of adversity is what makes the song resonate with listeners.
