Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.

I heard the gentle grace of his cadences
I couldn't say no
I couldn't say no
When he showed me his new silk scarves
Laid out on a shiny black plastic tray
Couldn't say, couldn't say, couldn't say, couldn't say, couldn't say no
And I'm sorry I couldn't
Do you know how badly I wanted to?
Didn't want, didn't want, didn't want, didn't want, didn't want to lose you
But his smile was dazzling
And his eyes were sparkling
Like moonlight on the water at midnight
Couldn't say, couldn't say, couldn't say, couldn't say, couldn't say, couldn't say no
I couldn't say no
The song "The Coroner's Gambit" by The Mountain Goats is about coming to terms with death and the inevitability of it. The lyrics describe the singer's encounter with death, who comes to them in the form of a charismatic and alluring figure, offering them silk scarves and a peaceful transition to the afterlife. Despite their desire to hold on to life and not leave their loved ones behind, the singer ultimately cannot resist the charm of death and gives in to their offer.
The use of repetition throughout the song emphasizes the singer's struggle to resist death's advances. Each time they say "couldn't say no," it becomes more desperate and hopeless. The mention of death's dazzling smile and sparkling eyes adds to the allure of the character, making it difficult for the singer to resist.
Overall, the song explores the theme of mortality and the idea that death is an unavoidable part of life. It portrays death not as a scary or ominous entity, but as something that can be seductive and comforting in its own way.
