Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.
Tianchi Lake
The Mountain Goats Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Changbai's high fine western peaks just beneath the clouds
Currents in the water churning in their course
Body of a sea-lion, head just like a horse
Preacher in the soft brown sand begins to speak his piece
High winds in the treetops low flying winter geese
No one taking pictures everybody still
No one at the lakeside now, moon up in the sky
Night birds in the dragon spruce, moaning long and high
Backstroking on the surface, moonlight on its face
Floats the Tianchi Monster, staring into space
Out around the temple now narcissus in bloom
Censers packed with sandalwood send smoke into the room
Children in the sand outside on their hands and knees
Sketching pictures all day long of stranger things than these
The song "Tianchi Lake" by The Mountain Goats tells the story of a visit to Tianchi Lake, which is located in Changbai Mountains in China. The first verse describes a group of children who are playing by the water banks and laughing loudly while admiring the stunning view of Changbai's high western peaks just beneath the clouds. The currents in the water are churning in their course, and the description of the creature in the water is interesting: "Body of a sea-lion, head just like a horse." This verse paints a picture of a serene place where even the fictional creatures are beautiful.
In the second verse, a preacher is standing in the soft brown sand and begins to speak, while high winds in the treetops are blowing and low-flying winter geese fly by. The scene is one of tranquility and calm, and no one is taking pictures or disrupting the peacefulness. The water, following its course, symbolizes the continuity of life and how things flow in their natural way.
The last verse describes a night scene where no one is at the lake anymore, but the moon rises high in the sky. The night birds in the dragon spruce are moaning long and high, and the Tianchi Monster floats on the surface, staring into space. The song ends with children outside the temple admiring the narcissus in bloom while also sketching pictures of stranger things than they had seen at the lake.
Overall, "Tianchi Lake" is a beautifully written song about nature, peace, and tranquility. The lyrics and imagery used to describe the lake are both detailed and vivid, providing a clear picture of the scenery and the feelings associated with it.
