Darnielle began the new millennium with The Coroner's Gambit for Absolutely Kosher before signing to 4AD for the release of the surprisingly polished Tallahassee in 2002. We Shall All Be Healed followed in 2004, and one year later, Darnielle was back with The Sunset Tree. Remaining as prolific as ever, Darnielle turned away from the intensity of The Sunset Tree for a calmer, more reflective set of songs on 2006's Get Lonely. The accessible and assured Heretic Pride appeared in 2008. Next up was the Bible verse-inspired The Life of the World to Come, the group's sixth album for 4AD, in 2010. Switching to Merge Records in 2011, Darnielle released All Eternals Deck, which was recorded in four different studios in Brooklyn, Boston, North Carolina, and Florida with four different producers -- John Congleton, Scott Solter, Brandon Eggleston, and Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal frontman Erik Rutan -- helming various tracks. That year the band was also handpicked by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he was curating in Minehead, England, but they were ultimately unable to appear due to scheduling issues.
West Country Dream
The Mountain Goats Lyrics

You slipped your hand into the door jam
Blood coursing through the air tonight
I know who I am
And I know who you are
Or who you were just an hour ago
Static interference on the radio tonight
Quick as lightning
You brought your hand back inside
And you shut the door behind you
It's too hot out there tonight
Breath rising and falling
Expansion, contraction
Why'd you tell me this?
Were you looking for my reaction?
The Mountain Goats' song "West Country Dream" is a fascinating piece that tells a story of a peculiar event. The song opens with the line "Sure as a surgeon, you slipped your hand into the door jam," referring to someone's bold but risky action. As indicated in the next line, there was blood involved, creating a tense atmosphere. However, the singer swiftly identifies their identity despite the chaos around them, separating themselves from the troubling situation.
The following lines, "And I know who you are or who you were just an hour ago, static interference on the radio tonight, I know what I know" establish additional tension, alluding to an undisclosed situation that may have occurred within an hour. The static interference on the radio could imply a further communication breakdown between the characters. Then, in the third stanza, the singer seems to confront or question the culprit, who is characterized as someone who acts quickly but with purpose. The singer picks up on their conscious contraction and expansion of breath, as though their curiosity or shock is amplified by the breath of the perpetrator.
Overall, "West Country Dream" leaves its listener feeling as though they have stumbled across a tiny window into a moment in a bigger story. It is a song that is contemplative and ambiguous, leaving it open to individuals' interpretation.
