The Move evolved from several mid-1960s Birmingham-based groups, including Carl Wayne & The Vikings, The Nightriders & The Mayfair Set. The group's name seems to refer to the move various members of these bands made to form the group. Beside Roy Wood, the original members of the Move were drummer Bev Bevan, bassist Chris "Ace" Kefford, vocalist Carl Wayne & guitarist Trevor Burton.
Their first single, 'Night of Fear' was released in 1966 and was the first in a line of memorable hits penned chiefly by Roy Wood.
'I Can Hear the Grass Grow', 'Blackberry Way' & Flowers in the Rain (the latter being the first record played on BBC Radio 1), are The Move's better known work not forgetting 1971's 'Tonight'. The group became more experimental and innovative as time went on especially on the albums 'Shazam' and 'Message from the Country'.
Several changes left the final line-up in 1971 as Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan, evolving into the first incarnation of Electric Light Orchestra which Wood left soon after to form Wizzard.

Cherry Blossom Clinic
Is there any truth in what they say
Cherry Blossom Clinic
Lock me in and throw the key away
In this sad position where I lie
From the corner of my eye
Callous friends just pass me by
Doctor pays a visit
Everyday I keep asking for my Dad
They must think I'm going mad
Lift the blankets off my face
Quick before I suffocate
Trying hard to meditate
Tell the people, "What a scene"
Write a letter to the Queen
Asking her if she can come to tea
Cherry Blossom Clinic
Is there any truth in what they say
Cherry Blossom Clinic
Lock me in and throw the key away
Up above the sun is high
Like a tea tray in the sky
Helicopter lands upon my bed
Phantom horses quickly fade
Turning into lemonade
Probably feel better when I'm dead

Cherry Blossom Clinic
Lock me in and throw the key away
The lyrics to The Move's song "Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited" revolve around the experiences of a patient in a mental institution. The opening lines describe the singer waking up to find out that he has been signed in and will be kept in bed due to his state of mind. The authorities have ordered that he be fed special food for his thoughts, indicating that he is not of sound mind. The singer then goes on to describe his surroundings and experiences within the clinic. He mentions the Cherry Blossom Clinic several times, asking if there is any truth in what they say and eventually requesting to be locked in and have the key thrown away.
The lyrics are rich in surreal imagery, describing a sunbeam from flowered skies, twenty thousand butterflies and a helicopter landing on the singer's bed. The lines "Lift the blankets off my face/Quick before I suffocate/Trying hard to meditate" indicate the singer's desperation to escape the suffocating environment of the clinic. The song ends with the singer saying he'll probably feel better when he's dead, showcasing the bleakness of his situation.
Overall, "Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited" provides a glimpse into the mind of someone going through mental illness and institutionalization. The surreal imagery, while initially disorienting, highlights the confusion and bewilderment that often accompanies mental illness.

What a band! Roy Wood is a genius. It's too bad they never really had a hit in America.
They could have been as big as The Beatles. The production was bigger than anything you could hear at the time. The Drums sound massive, the Guitars thick and textured and the Vocals are outstanding. The whole track is a masterpiece from the slamming beginning to the Classical section at the end.

Not knocking this band, but if I had a nickel for every time that I've heard the phrase' "...could have been bigger than The Beatles" I would be a very rich man, indeed. Meanwhile, nearly 60 years later, we're still waiting for the next Beatles...
horowizard
@obbor4 There will never be another Beatles. I didn't say they were bigger than The Beatles, I said just as big.
Sam Sprole
@obbor4 There have been many bands better than The Beatles.
Joaquin Lezcano
@obbor4 I agree. But you have to agree, they were the most lucky band ever.

Well, The Move, or its successor band, ELO, would've been as Big as the Beatles. What used to drive me batsh*t was when teen mags in the 1970s tried to tell us that the pre-fab five, aka the Bay City Rollers, were the next Beatles.

Apparently during their live performances, The Move used to perform this track complete with the long instrumental ending, with it's various excerpts by classical composers. Maybe an unwitting predication of The Move's future metamorphosis into The Electric Light Orchestra. My favourite Move track. Would have been great to have seen it performed live.
