Night Of Fear
The Move Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The silent night has turned to a night of fear
With windows howling wind into your ear
You listen to the spirits far behind
These things you hear are too much for your mind

The bell strikes and your spine chills like the grave
The chill that turns your blood from red to grey
You know that with these things you see and hear
The silent night has turned to a night of fear

Image on your bedroom wall
Shadows marching in the hall
Just about to flip your mind
Just about to trip your mind
Just about to flip your mind
Just about to trip your mind

The green and purple lights affect your sight
Your mother cannot comfort you tonight

Your brain calls out for help that's never there
The silent night has turned to a night of fear

Overall Meaning

The Move’s song Night of Fear is a haunting tune that captures the sense of dread and unease that can come with a sleepless night. The lyrics describe a silent night that suddenly turns into a night of fear, with the howling wind and strange sounds outside the window driving the listener to the brink of madness. The bell strikes and sends shivers down the spine, as the mind begins to play tricks and the shadows march in the hall. The green and purple lights distort reality and the mother’s comfort cannot ease the distress. This song captures the terror of a sleepless and traumatic night that will forever be remembered by its victims.

The lyrics are gripping and are enhanced by the music that starts with a haunting organ and grows into a rock chorus with distorted guitar sounds. The composition of the song is interesting with the use of an unusual time signature that changes from 4/4 to 7/8, lending a sense of unease and mystery. The orchestration is also interesting with the use of symphonic arrangements, changes in tempo and the addition of brass and strings that add to the dramatic effect of the song.

Their outfits are so outstanding, just pure Carnaby Street. A Real picture in time. Thanks.

paisley, love beads, flared cords, round sunglasses, madras shirts, what looks like it might be a cravat, a waistcoat...it's like late 60s fashion bingo!

@manchild3479

better then

@canesvenatici4259

Not really Carnaby St. Carnaby St. fashion would be straight mod fashion, no indian/hippie flourishes.

Ace is just so cool! I love how they all sing and play and look. The Move were just fantastic at this point, Roy's songs, the showmanship, the skill. In a post-modern world, its not possible to invent a band this good, have pity on your children for the poor fayre they are forced to consume...

@canesvenatici4259

There are probably bands out there that are good in their own little way, just not any you've heard of or in the mainstream. The radio isn't the be-all-end-all of music.

@manchild3479

i agree.their best period.

@PAULLONDEN

Perfect evaluation.....Such a talented band The way they managed to present studio quality sound on that stage . Unheard of especially in those days..
