Takin' It Out And Choppin' It Up
The Movielife Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I understand that you couldn't take it, couldn't take it anymore
I understand that you had your problems,
Maybe more than I saw
But when you got on a plane that day
You lost all your privileges with me
Cause I heard so many things
Thought we parted, thought we parted peacefully
Then you got home,
Opened your mouth and said all those stupid things
You even mouthed off to my friends
Here's what I'm saying

Come on, come on, shut up, shut up
I hope this song will shut you up
Come on, come on, shut up, shut up

I appreciate all the work that,
All the work that you put in
And we care so much about you,
And hope that all your problems end
But all the foolish things you said
Do you know, we never said a thing
We held it in, so go take your medicine
Or smoke yourself to sleep
Cause you got home, opened your mouth and said all those stupid things
You even mouthed off to my friends
Here's what I'm saying

Come on, come on, shut up, shut up
I hope this song will shut you up
Come on, come on, shut up, shut up

And all the things I could say
The ammunition, the arsenal of words
And it's been so long now, all the questions
And out of respect, I kept my mouth shut!

Come on, come on, shut up, shut up
I hope this song will shut you up
Come on, come on, shut up, shut up

Come on, come on, shut up, shut up

Or I'll get Phil to shut you up
Come on, come on, shut up, shut up

Overall Meaning

The Movielife's song Takin' It Out And Choppin' It Up, released in 2003, is a pretty straightforward and blunt message directed at a former friend or lover who has done something to warrant their being removed from the singer's life. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that they understand that the other person was struggling with their own problems, but that when they left on a plane one day, they lost all their privileges with the singer, and when they returned and started mouthing off to the singer's friends, they sealed their own fate.

The chorus is simple and to the point: "Come on, come on, shut up, shut up/ I hope this song will shut you up," repeated twice. The bridge is where the singer really lays into the other person, referencing "all the ammunition, the arsenal of words" that they could use against the other person but haven't, out of respect or self-control.

Overall, the song is a cathartic release of anger and frustration towards someone who has hurt the singer in some way, and the singer is taking the opportunity to tell them to shut up and go away, using the song as a vehicle for their message.
