In 2001 the song Take the Long Road and Walk It circulated as a demo, before being released by Fierce Panda. The band were quickly signed by EMI/Virgin imprint, Hut, who released their first EP You Might as Well Try to Fuck Me.
In 2002, following another EP, The People, they released their eponymous debut album.
In Autumn 2004, they released their second album, Welcome to the North, and the accompanying single Freedom Fighters, before touring with Incubus. One of the singles from the album, Breakin', became a hit on American rock radio.
Their eagerly awaited third album entitled Strength in Numbers was released in June 2008. However, in September 2010, singer/songwriter Robert Harvey confirmed the group's intention to split, and on 31 March 2011 the band announced a series of farewell shows in Japan and the UK.

Inconceivable Odds
The Music Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
'Cause we've come so far as one
Decreed out of here
So on my back I feel some sun
Flee the darkness of this hour
Leave them more than a war behind
My life's a burning tower
The walls are the years we've climbed
How do I fight these inconceivable odds
From bringing me down?
The drive for explanation grips us all
And pins us to the ground
If I ever leave your side unattended
Exposed to the fall
If I ever leave your heart undefended
Your back to the wall
Everyone must exist alone
The horror races with no ending
My thoughts are synchronized
To a clock with no time
The hearts of men will be corrupted
Abandoned by themselves
Life makes their minds destructive
Flattened by the ? insides
How do I fight these inconceivable odds
From bringing me down?
The drive for explanation grips us all
And pins us to the ground
If I ever leave your side unattended
Exposed to the fall
If I ever leave your heart undefended
Your back to the wall
The Music's song Inconceivable Odds is an introspective and existential work that explores the themes of struggle, unity, and the inevitability of personal and collective suffering. The opening lines urge listeners to lay down their "rigid arms," suggesting a surrender to the forces that have brought them together. The singer notes that they have "come so far as one," implying that they have overcome adversity and built a community that is greater than the sum of its parts. The lines "My life's a burning tower / The walls are the years we've climbed" evoke the image of a person standing amidst the ruins of their own life, surrounded by the struggles they have overcome.
The chorus reflects the frustration and anxiety that come from trying to understand and overcome a seemingly insurmountable obstacle. The "inconceivable odds" are a metaphor for the challenges that life presents us, from personal struggles to global crises. The "drive for explanation" is the human need to make sense of our own suffering and that of others. However, the singer emphasizes that this drive can also be paralyzing, "pinning us to the ground" and preventing us from taking action. The final lines of the chorus speak to the importance of protecting those we love: "If I ever leave your side unattended / Exposed to the fall / If I ever leave your heart undefended / Your back to the wall."
The second verse returns to the theme of personal struggle, with the singer acknowledging the loneliness and sense of futility that often accompany it. The lines "Everyone must exist alone / The horror races with no ending" suggest that suffering is an inescapable part of the human condition. The clock with no time is a striking metaphor for the sense that our lives are slipping away from us even as we try to make sense of them. However, the final lines suggest that the singer has found some solace in the presence of others: "Life makes their minds destructive / Flattened by the ? insides."
