Shipoopi
The Music Man Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, a woman who'll kiss on the very first date
Is usually a hussy
And a woman who'll kiss on the second time out
Is anything but fussy

But a woman who'll wait till the third time around
Head in the clouds, feet on the ground
She's the girl you're glad you found
She's your shipoopi

Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi
The girl who's hard to get
Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi
But you can win her yet

Walk her once just to raise the curtain
Then you walk around twice and make for certain
Once more in the flower garden
She will never get sore if you beg her pardon

Do re me fa so la si
Do si la sol fa mi re do

Squeeze her once, when she isn't lookin'
If you get a fqueeze back, that's fancy cookin'
Once more for a pepper-upper
She will never get sore on her way to supper

Do re me fa sol la si
Do si do

Now little ol' Sal was a no-gal
As anyone could see
Lookit her now - she's a go-gal
Who only goes for me

Squeeze her once, when she isn't lookin'
If you get a squeeze back, that's fancy cookin'
Once more for a pepper-upper
She will never get sore on her way to supper

Do re me fa sol la si
Do si do

Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi
The girl who's hard to get
Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi
But you can win her yet

Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi
The girl who's hard to get

Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi
But you can win her yet, shipoopi

Overall Meaning

The Music Man's "Shipoopi" is a song that outlines a particular type of woman that is worth pursuing, and how to do it successfully. The lyrics claim that a woman who kisses on the first date is a "hussy," and a woman who kisses on the second is not "fussy." However, a woman who waits until the third date is the one to pursue because she is the epitome of balance, with her "head in the clouds, feet on the ground." She is the "girl you're glad you found" and is referred to as a "shipoopi."

The song's chorus repeats the word "shipoopi," emphasizing the uniqueness of the type of woman being described. The verses go on to describe how to court this type of woman successfully. The singer should "walk around twice" with the woman, "make for certain" that she's interested, and "walk her once just to raise the curtain." The song warns that she may initially appear uninterested, but a good squeeze will change her mind.

Overall, the song is a playful, lighthearted ode to courting and wooing a particular type of woman. Its upbeat tempo and catchy chorus make it a favorite among fans of musical theater.

Family Guy doesn't "steal" old classic content. It parodies, pays homage to them, and in turn brings traffic to both content.

Jared Wolfe There ya go.

Same thing when I see old songs on YouTube for the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack.

@ileolai

This comment is proof that nobody can tell the difference between ''parody'', ''homage'' and outright stealing anymore because of that show, lol

@mynameistooolongtofi

Don't you need to mention who the song is by if you're paying homage?

@benrind1182

Lol if you don't realize that the majority of the content is based off old skits and musical then you are an idiot. Seth McFarlane had a strong love for old musicals and that is pretty obvious from his writing. Its not his fault if your too stupid to realize what hes trying to parody
