1.) The Mystics are a singing group which began in Brooklyn, New York, USA in the late 1950s. The group was known as The Overons, a quintet that, when signed to Laurie Records, consisted of Phil Cracolici (b. 1937, lead), Albee Cracolici (b. 1936, baritone), George Galfo (b. 1939, second tenor), Bob Ferrante (b. 1936, first tenor), and Al Contrera (b. 1940, bass). Under the direction of their manager, Jim Gribble, The Overons became The Mystics when each group member wrote a name they liked on a slip of paper, placed the papers in a hat and Al Contrera's choice was drawn.

2.) The Mystics were formed in 1965 during the glory years of HK’s English pop scene. The members largely comprised of hkongers of Portugese decent. The band was popular at the school parties and “tea dances”, and recorded chart toppers like I can’t help myself, Sweet soul music, Midnight hour, Going out of my head, Song of the wind, One day (sang by Don Choi) and Send her back (composed by Michael Remedios and Tony Tavares). They disbanded in 1971.

It's sad that 50's singers are not given the credit they deserve for their voices. The Mystics are just one example. Doo Wop gave birth to some of the greatest vocalists of all time. Tony Williams of the Platters, Dion, Larry Chance, Johnny Maestro. Among many more!

Being a lover of both classical music and oldies, I can fully support that view. It is not hard to understand why: Most of the Doo Wop stars were of Italian decent and the children of poor imigrants to the United States. Born in the 30s, they were practically raised on the voices of Caruso and Gigli. Doo Wop is a beautiful example what can happen if you mix classic Italian belcanto with elements of Jazz, Blues and Country Music.

The similarity between Hushabye and Little Star must have 'struck' me, too, cause I was almost impelled to play them back to back, a moment ago. What really amazes me is the simplicity of the melodic lines in these songs. I mean, how does one take a basic tune like 'Twinkle' and turn it into the biggest hit of its genre in 1958? My all time favorite band "The Beatles" were well know for their middle 8s choruses in their songs but the middle 8 in Hushabye has to be about my favorite chorus part of any song I have ever heard. The reason that deaf people will 'listen' to music is that they can feel the vibrations. Many years ago I used to go to a club where they played rock and roll really loud. There were lots of deaf people who would congregate there because they could feel the vibrations of the music through their bodies. In fact, you could feel it through the floor! It was so cool to see these folks experiencing the music in a social setting, and so cool to experience it with them.

When I was 12, I learned to babysit babies and toddlers I would sing this song. It never failed to make the baby soothe them to sleep in my arms. It gave me so much pleasure because I was darn good at age 12 years to make the baby stop crying and allowed me to hold the baby in my arms to rock them to the music as I sang the lyrics. Plus, I became a good mother when I had my two and they loved sleeping in my arms.

When I was a kid growing up on Pelham Parkway in the Bronx, this song came out -- 1959 -- I loved this song but what I loved even more was the fact that in the Summer, with my bedroom windows open, I could hear the train pulling out of the Pelham Parkway El -- and it sounded just like the refrain to this song -- even BETTER was when this song came on my transistor radio while the train was pulling out-- the refrain and the train were in perfect harmony!!

Heard all over town, and then some, in the magical Summer of 1959.......long sleak cars with the tops down, slick hairdo's and DA's, white bucks and socks, pegged pants, cut-off teashirts, Top 40 AM radio in its prime, with coin-operated jukeboxes in the restaurants and cofee shops.......many were playing this!!

Hi Nick! Since I used to be able to mimick every falsetto voice around, I would like to mention a couple others: Frankie Valley, Roy Orbison. I will always love the music from that era--the era my boyfriend and I grew up in. I can still sing 90-100% of the lyrics from just about all the doo wop songs of that era.

I always considered Little Star by the Elegents and Husabye by the Mystics to be kissin cousins Totally loved both then and even more so now The 50's greatest decade in music

+christopher dawson A lady who does a radio show in Dallas just told me that when she first heard Hushaby and Little Star, way back when, she thought they were both done by Dion and The Belmonts. Believable--makes some sense!
