A Stillness
The Naked and Famous Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Strike spears of light
Inside my eyes
Over the fields
Where we believed
Our love had died
Still
Be still
Roses of white
Blushing with life
Don't pass me by
Whisper the needs
Quiet release
Fever in me
Head cases full
Rise out of you
Breaking in two
Let there be light
Golden inside
Dark was the night
Still
Still
Be still
The Naked and Famous’s song A Stillness explores the emotions of heartbreak and the process of healing. The opening lines, “Gallantly rise, Strike spears of light, Inside my eyes”, suggest a sense of hopefulness despite feeling hurt. The singer acknowledges that their love had died and yet, there is still a glimmer of light that can be seen, symbolized by the “spears of light”. The chorus, “Still, still, Be still” invites the listener to be patient and present with the emotions that are arising within them.
The second verse is more hopeful and implies a sense of renewal. The roses are blooming and blushing with life, not passing the singer by. The line, “Whisper the needs, Quiet release, Fever in me” suggests a cathartic release that is happening within the singer. The verse speaks to the idea that in order to heal and move forward, we must listen to what we need and release what does not serve us.
The final lines, “Head cases full, Rise out of you, Breaking in two, Let there be light, Golden inside, Dark was the night” can be interpreted as the singer acknowledging their pain and allowing it to be transformed. The “head cases” full of thoughts and emotions no longer hold the singer captive, but instead are being transformed into light. This transformation occurs in the dark, in the midst of pain, and yet there is still something golden, something beautiful that emerges.
