After their initial formation in 2008, their debut album "Passive Me, Aggressive You" was released on the "Somewhat Damaged" label during September 2010. The single "Young Blood" debuted at number one on the New Zealand chart - the first New Zealand artist to do so in three years. On 6 December 2010, the BBC announced that The Naked and Famous had been nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll.
Their second album, 2013's In Rolling Waves, reached the top 5 on the New Zealand Albums chart, and top 15 on the Australian Albums and US Billboard Top Alternative Albums charts. Their following album, Simple Forms, was Xayalith and Powers' first release as a two-piece. Their fourth album, Recover, was released in 2020, and peaked at 19 on RMNZ's New Zealand Artist Albums chart.
Birds
The Naked and Famous Lyrics

I want something more
For you
Oh let go
I love you so
Who meant everything to me
Oh no don't rush me baby
I don't know what to believe
Oh let go
I love you so
Could this be true?
Could I be with you?
And never regret it
I dreamed you said its fine
And we got nothing to hide
Oh let go
I love you so
Could this be true?
Could I be with you?
And never regret these things that we do
The Naked and Famous' song "Birds" seems to depict someone who is uncertain about their true feelings towards their partner. The lyrics "I'm so untrue, I want something more" suggest that they may have a wandering eye, or perhaps they are simply struggling being in a committed relationship. However, there is a hint of hope and longing in the lines "Could this be true? Could I be with you? And never regret it." It's as if the person is battling with their own indecision, but deep down they know they want to be with their partner and build a life together.
The chorus of the song emphasizes this internal conflict, with the repetition of "Oh let go, I love you so" suggesting that the person is trying to let go of their uncertainties and fully embrace their feelings. But the following lines - "I don't know what to believe" and "I dreamed you said it's fine and we got nothing to hide" - indicate that they are still grappling with doubts.
Overall, "Birds" is a beautifully honest portrayal of the complexities of romantic relationships, and the emotional turmoil that can come with trying to navigate them.

This sounds like everyone's first song they write to someone they truly love. That raw emotion: uncontainable. For we don't have the skill quite yet to show how far that love goes. It is without limits.
