After their initial formation in 2008, their debut album "Passive Me, Aggressive You" was released on the "Somewhat Damaged" label during September 2010. The single "Young Blood" debuted at number one on the New Zealand chart - the first New Zealand artist to do so in three years. On 6 December 2010, the BBC announced that The Naked and Famous had been nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll.
Their second album, 2013's In Rolling Waves, reached the top 5 on the New Zealand Albums chart, and top 15 on the Australian Albums and US Billboard Top Alternative Albums charts. Their following album, Simple Forms, was Xayalith and Powers' first release as a two-piece. Their fourth album, Recover, was released in 2020, and peaked at 19 on RMNZ's New Zealand Artist Albums chart.
Falling
The Naked and Famous Lyrics

Take comfort in the fall
In everything I gave you
Thank you, thank you all
I never quite forgave you
Fire away
We're made in simple forms
Taking cover in the way through
And begging me to stay true
Loveless escape
Silent restraint
How can I stay
Not that I want to
How can I stay
Not that I want you
How can I stay
Not to get closer
How can I stay
Now that it's over
Silent restraint
Take comfort in the fall
In everything I gave you
Thank you, thank you all
I never quite forgave you
Fire away
We're made in simple forms
Taking cover in the way through
Falling to the floor
And begging me to stay with you
All the way home
Loveless escape
Home
Silent restraint
Oh, home
How can I stay
Not that I want to
How can I stay
Not that I want you
How can I stay
Not to get closer
How can I stay
Now that it's over
How can I stay
Not that I want to
How can I stay
Not that I want you
How can I stay
Not to get closer
How can I stay
Now that it's over
The lyrics to The Naked and Famous's song "Falling" explore themes of heartbreak, unrequited love, and the struggle to let go of a past relationship. The repeated phrase "Silent restraint" suggests the internal conflict and emotional burden the singer experiences. They find solace in the fall, which may signify letting go and embracing the pain as a means of growth and healing.
The lines "In everything I gave you, thank you, thank you all" and "I never quite forgave you" reveal a sense of gratitude for the experiences shared in the relationship, yet also a lingering resentment or hurt. The singer acknowledges that they have not fully forgiven the other person, indicating that the wounds are still fresh.
The lines "Fire away, we're made in simple forms" express a sense of vulnerability and being exposed to the other person's actions or words. The desire to take cover and find a way through the pain is evident as they mention "falling to the floor" and being begged to "stay true" or "stay with you."
The chorus reflects the singer's internal struggle of wanting to move on but feeling conflicted. They question how they can stay, not because they want to, but because they may still have lingering feelings or attachment. The repetition of the phrase "How can I stay" emphasizes the internal battle they are facing.
In the end, the song suggests that the relationship has come to an end and the singer is grappling with the aftermath. The line "Now that it's over" implies a sense of finality and acceptance. Despite the pain and struggle portrayed throughout the lyrics, there is a sense of resignation and attempting to find closure and move on.
