After their initial formation in 2008, their debut album "Passive Me, Aggressive You" was released on the "Somewhat Damaged" label during September 2010. The single "Young Blood" debuted at number one on the New Zealand chart - the first New Zealand artist to do so in three years. On 6 December 2010, the BBC announced that The Naked and Famous had been nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll.
Their second album, 2013's In Rolling Waves, reached the top 5 on the New Zealand Albums chart, and top 15 on the Australian Albums and US Billboard Top Alternative Albums charts. Their following album, Simple Forms, was Xayalith and Powers' first release as a two-piece. Their fourth album, Recover, was released in 2020, and peaked at 19 on RMNZ's New Zealand Artist Albums chart.
Last Forever

And lay the day to waste forsake these bones
Hopelessly abandoning our phones
To watch the clouds awake over the homes
Of people we won't ever know (ever know)
'Cause nothing is bigger and brighter than this
Yeah, I could tell you that we won't exist
Love, don't feel it could last forever
Love, I'm ready to let you know
Love, don't feel it could last forever
Love, I'm ready to let you go
Can we stay alight
Reignite these embers just for one more night
Never to grow old if we just frame it right
So much for foresight in this last dance
Trying to admit that I should let this go
Love, don't feel it could last forever
Love, I'm ready to let you know
Love, don't feel it could last forever
Love, I'm ready to let you go
Ready to let you know (you know)
Ready to let you go (you go)
Ready to let you go
Can we stay awake
Can we stay awake
Can we stay awake
Can we stay awake
Love, don't feel it could last forever (forever)
Love, I'm ready to let you know (ready to let you know)
Love, don't feel it could last forever (ready to let you go)
Love, I'm ready to let you go
Ready to let you go (you go)
Ready to let you know (you know)
Ready to let you go (you go)
Ready to let you know
Ready to let you know
Ready to let you go (you go)
Ready to let you know
This feeling won't last forever, forever
The Naked and Famous's song Last Forever is about the fleeting nature of love and the acceptance that it cannot last forever. The first verse talks about abandoning technology and living in the moment. The singer wants to watch the clouds and enjoy the beauty around them, even if it belongs to strangers. The chorus repeats “Love, don't feel it could last forever, Love, I'm ready to let you know, Love, don't feel it could last forever, Love, I'm ready to let you go” which shows the singer acknowledging that relationships can't last forever and they are ready to let go.
The second verse talks about reigniting the passion for one more night and not growing old. The line “so much for foresight in this last dance” shows that the singer realizes that they were mistaken in thinking that the love they had could last forever. The chorus repeats again, emphasizing the message of letting go. The song ends with the singer saying they are ready to let go and that the feeling of love is fleeting.

I love TNAF because their music is amazing AND.. it's made by humans for humans. Not by corporations for consumers. This song is clearly written from the heart to express what we all have felt. It does what art does. It helps us understand our circumstances. And for that, I am thankful.
