Embraceable You
The Nat King Cole Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Embrace me, my sweet embraceable you
Embrace me, you irreplaceable you

Just one look at you
My heart grows tipsy in me
You and you alone
Bring out the Gypsy in me
I love all the many charms about you
Above all, I want my arms about you

Don't be a naughty baby
Come to papa, come to papa do
My sweet embraceable you

Don't be a naughty baby

Come to pama, come to pama do
My sweet embraceable you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Nat King Cole Trio's song Embraceable You describe the singer's infatuation with someone who they greatly desire to embrace. The first two lines of the song "Embrace me, my sweet embraceable you. Embrace me, you irreplaceable you" makes the singer's desire for the other person very clear. They address their lover using the word "sweet" and "irreplaceable," describing their affection for the person.

As the song progresses, the singer becomes more descriptive about how the other person makes them feel. They say that just one look at the person makes their heart grow "tipsy" in them. They continue to describe the intensity of their attraction saying that the other person alone brings out the "Gypsy" in them. Being a Gypsy can mean having a wandering, free-spirited, and bohemian lifestyle, which could be a metaphor in this context for the singer's feelings of being completely swept away by the other person.

Towards the end of the song, the singer urges the person to come to them saying "Don't be a naughty baby, come to papa." These words echo a sense of endearment and care towards the person the song addresses.

I would come home from school and my Pops would be playing albums from people like Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Eydie Gorme etc., and I would say with disgust, "what is that stuff on the record player?". He would just tell me that it's good music. Well, back in 1965, I wasn't hearing it! Fast forward to 2017.........I listen to my Pops music every single day!

I'm right there with you...and your Pops. I could even hear this NKC classic being played within our stadium as fans file out and continue their celebration beating Georgia for the Eastern Division crown and a chance to whip Alabama. It is that good, that smooth, and that much of a classic, just like our Kentucky Wildcats football team.

It never gets old

Exactly! With my parents it was Tony Bennett and Andy Williams. If youth but knew...

The most beautiful song I've ever heard. This is the best version of this particular recording, just listen to that guitar solo. So beautiful. Rest In Peace, Nat. Rest In Peace, Natalie. You two are reunited, making beautiful music for the angels

@SnortingMagic

Outstanding version, jazz and romance in its perfect equation. Just sent it to the lady I love (don't be naughty, come to Papa, bring the gipsy in me). Lovely. Thank you for uploading this jewel

Nat Cole, cooler than Frank Sinatra sipping a milkshake in a snow storm.

My body really melted like I was in an opium den in China.... Every stroke of the piano felt like a raindrop, and Nat's voice guides me like a wind sail.
