Words by Lorenz Hart and Music by Richard Rogers and sung in the Broadway
musical "The Boys From Syracuse" by Eddie Albert and Marcy Westcott
A # 6 hit for Horace Heidt in 1938
A # 2 hit for Benny Goodman in 1939

This can't be love, because I feel so well,
No sobs, no sorrows, no sighs.
This can't be love; I get no dizzy spells,
My head is not in the skies.

My heart does not stand still, just hear it beat.
This is too sweet to be love.

This can't be love, because I feel so well,
But still I love to look in your eyes.

(Instrumental interlude)

My heart does not stand still, just hear it beat.
This is too sweet to be love.

This can't be love, because I feel so well,

But still I love to look in your eyes.
Still I love to look in your eyes.

Overall Meaning

The Nat King Cole Trio's song "This Can't Be Love," is a classic example of the American Songbook standards that captivated audiences and maintained relevancy long after the era of the big band. The song's lyrics, penned by Lorenz Hart and music composed by Richard Rogers, conveys a sense of disbelief about the feeling of love. Cole sings about not experiencing the typical symptoms of love, like heart palpitations, feeling lightheaded, or emotional turmoil. Instead, he feels content and happy in the presence of his beloved.

However, Cole still cannot help but stare into his lover's eyes, despite his supposed disbelief in love, suggesting that his skepticism of love is fleeting. The instrumental interlude following the second stanza allows the listener to bask in the delightful melody and the musicianship of Cole's trio.

Interestingly, the song initially did not perform well upon its release, and it took other artists recording and popularizing the tune before it became a hit. "This Can't Be Love" first charted in 1938, reaching #6 by the Horace Heidt orchestra, and it was later recorded by Benny Goodman, becoming a #2 hit in 1939. Nat King Cole's recording did not make the Top 100; however, it remains a definitive rendition, exemplifying the effortless joy that characterized Cole's vocal performances.

This is gold! Amazing footage. I can't believe that such old clips of this show still exist - obviously the US were better at archiving their old programs than the UK or Australia.
