⁠@@aelix56 the situation is completely different because OP didn’t raise Emily, she was already married when Emily was born, while Emily’s biological brother was thrusted onto OP while she was still in high school. Of course the attachment will be completely different. Emily admitted to seeing her biological brother as a cousin, but expects access to the same resources because they came out of the same womb. OP’s household doesn’t involve only her, but also her husband and younger son. OP has shown Emily plenty of empathy, but Emily seems to have none. The entitlement, even at her age, genuinely upsets me.

It is completely unfair for the daughter to expect the same treatment as her brother, her brother was abandoned by her mother and her aunt grew a mother/son attachment to her brother after dedicating a significant portion of her life to taking care of him.

If you want to say it's fair for her to be jealous, it's in the same vein as being jealous of a stranger for being born in a more fortunate environment, her being related did not entitle her to the same treatment as her brother, they had entirely different circumstances and that was the luck of the draw.

It is a miracle that her brother got to live the life he did, if the aunt had not decided to sacrifice her youth to take care of her sister's child, he may well have been abandoned or abused, leading to a very dark life, you don't get to expect a miracle for being less fortunate because someone else got a miracle for being abandoned.

And yeah the mother is less neglectful when it comes to her daughter...she did not freaking abandon her like she did her son while saying she wished he was not born, it is of a completely different magnitude.

Considering OP’s sister had previously been telling Luke that he would be unloved once Justin was born, it’s easy to imagine the kinds of things she’s been telling Emily. Love or guilt and sometimes a combination of the two. It's natural to be torn about cutting family out of your life and can be a hard thing for many people to do. Even when treated badly some can't let go.. . Years ago in nursing school I had an instructor who told us an example from when she was a new nurse. She had to take care of a little girl in the hospital who had been intentionally injured by her own mother. After caring for the child and becoming emotionally attached my instructor said it broke her heart to see the happiness and joy that lit up the child's face when her mom came into the room to see her. Sometimes it takes years or bad treatment or even abuse before some people give up and cut those family ties.

I was both abused and abused by people who were abused same way as me. In words of my mentor "while you are aware what you are doing, you are responsible for what you are doing." Nothing stops Emily from trying to be opposite of her mom and imitating her aunt. Look at patterns not actions. Emily asks, demands and then assaults. Lol, "Drop the charges"... that's cute. The police have the video footage and a confirmed ID, there's no dropping charges now. It is not the victim that brings charges, it's the prosecutor. "Pressing Charges" just means you are formally asking the prosecutor to bring charges and are willing to offer testimony to aid the prosecution. With the video, they don't need OP's testimony. She violated the law, it is the STATE, not OP who is on the other side of the table, this is a criminal offense, not a civil case. It's out of OP's hands already, there is nothing she can do to stop this now. And while insurance will cover vandalism in most cases, without the police report, they'd have denied the claim. This girl is nearly an adult, she needs to learn to act like one.

I get what you are saying but mother theresa wasn't as good as she is talk about to be, she was doing some very ugly stuff in the name of her cause like being against painkillers and lots of medicines (even to dieing and very sick people), never refering/taking the people under her charity's care to a hospital (again, not even to the dieing ones), believed that suffering would get them closer to her god and baptised dieing Muslim and Hindus against their will. But when her time came she reach for the most modern medicines and doctors she could find in the best hospitals money could pay bcos turns out even tho her hospices were dirty poor her charity received millions of dolars each year that went to a their bank account not the people in need.

I feel like Emily has some mental issues, likely caused by her neglect. That switch from screaming at OP and using the brother card, and then later on cooling down and saying she understood where OP was coming from, and then screaming again a week later when OP had to cancel. honestly at the start I felt bad for Emiley as she was 9 when OPs sister started the idea of OP paying for Emily's things but in the end I was like "the hell?" she had a chance to build some kind of bond with her aunt but she blew it by being stupid and irrational, you can argue she was influenced by her mom but she is 17, its an age you already supposed to act like an adult, but she still act like a 9 year old(throwing tantrum when not getting what she want, jumping to conclusion and acting before thinking), its something that I see and think "she is a lost cause".

absolutely, but we cannot judge, as we don’t know the full story. it’s very possible Emily has been manipulated by her mother, as this is common within abusive families. it’s possible that she has been raised to not really know what’s good or bad. These are all possibilities, not proven but even if she’s seventeen, almost an adult, we can’t judge without knowing the full story. it is clear she needs therapy though, because whatever the cause she’s severely messed up.

Emily trying to manipulate her way into getting a car is ridiculous. Her desire for a shiny new car cost her BIG. The relationship between her grandparents is strained, she now doesn’t have much of a relationship with OP and her cousins. She’s also facing juvy/jail time. Ridiculous.

When I wanted a car, I went out and financed one. It took me until 23 to put a down payment down and I worked my ass off for it. I didn’t feel entitled to a car, I didn’t feel that it was the duty of those around me to finance my wants. I never expected anything more than maybe a $20 gift on my birthday, if that. I acquired nice things in life through hard work which is what my father instilled in me. It would never have crossed my mind to manipulate those around me into getting what I want. Emily’s mom royally messed up by allowing Emily’s antics to continue. As they say, the Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as Emily turned out just as spoiled and entitled as her mom.

My aunt got partial custody of me when i was 16, meaning i had 3 guardians. I love my mom but home life wasn't ok in the slightest and ik she has so much regret over it. At 15 (i think i blocked alot of it out) i moved in with my abusive father even though i told the court i and my siblings shouldn't be there. If i had told them my reason we wouldn't. After my dads suicide attempts, duis, and being generally homocidal to everyone i finally got out. When i was 17 in a drunken meltdown i told everyone what happened (in my state if your gardian is watching you and you dint leave your property its perfectly legal to drink) and what my father had done for years before i watched him get arrested for domestic violence at 7. Im assuming you know what im talking about and no it wasn't just physical and mental abuse. It started a court case because my therapist had to tell the authorities since my siblings couldn't get out. We then had a restraining order in set and now i keep away from anyone who agrees with him and lets their little girls arpund him. My aunt thought she was giving me the best life but it was like i was a replacement for the kid she never had and she negatively influenced my relationship with my mom. I had to take care of the house amd even started paying for backrent when i got a job at 17, which she then called and made my decision to quit. After i turned 18 i finally sought out help and after that was more ipen aboyt how i felt with her. Leading to one argument, that lead to her kivking me out since i wasn't in her control. What im trying to say you were the aunt i never had who saved that boy from a terrible life and im glad you went no contact with the mom. You didn't do it for yourself but also for him which my aunt never considered and this is amazing to see.

She seems that she's turned out to be just as entitled as her mom, I think it's in your best interest and ur families for u to cut contact with ur niece and don't drop the charges she needs to learn their are consequences to her actions. The OP should've remained NC with her parents, sister, BIL, and, even, her niece. They were all only cordial towards her and her family because of the inheritance that she got from her grandmother and their (OP and her family) well-to-do life. And Emily had, unfortunately, become like her mother. Though I do feel sorry for her, her actions and behavior are HORRIBLE. By vandalizing her cousin's car, Emily most likely ruined any further chances of a relationship with OP. It's one of those situations where you can't be nice to everyone.

Honestly op should push for emily getting therapy. It obviously messed her up mentally seeing her brother getting everything she wanted and her ending up unlucky in life. And op should also go no contact with emily for a while (secretly checking up on her if she wants to) as i think, emily has started to see op and her family as a solution to all her problems. But she and her family would never see her and luke (her own son) as the same and it would keep hurting emily and keep her making jealous. i feel so bad for op and emily! i do not agree with any of emily’s behavior but with how op explained her sister makes me so sad. emily does not know how to regulate her emotions probably from watching her parents and has probably been fed a load of crap from her mom :( i hope she can realize this soon and get some therapy to learn how to calm down when upset and express herself in a constructive way. op is so so gracious and loving for how much she has done for her family and deserves peace 🫶🏼

A very tragic story, Emily has to watch her own brother being raised with warmth and care while her own mother is barely interested and to put it bluntly: her mother said she would get a car and then reneged on the promise then after a period of time it seems like she might FINALLY be able to have a warm relationship a mother figure only for her aunt to ALSO renege on a promise...that was clearly the last straw, her aunt was put on a pedestal only to also break a promise and at that point Emily completely lost it. 16 years of jealousy and disappointment.

I sort of sympathise with Emily's situation as I myself was in a similar situation, but being that unstable and taking everything too personally like her is going to lead her to a self-destructive path where nothing/no one makes her happy. The harsh reality is that just because someone is living the life you want does not mean you are entitled to/ can either, while it is EXTREMELY hard for Emily to digest that as her own bio- brother is living her dream it is something she should understand. Life is not fair, sometimes it is what it is.

At 17 this girl took on responsibility for her nephew because her sister and parents didn’t want anything to do with him. Luke’s parents abandoned him and OP filled in the role because she cared about when really no one else did.

I understand the niece being jealous and upset about it, I would’ve been too if I was in her place. It’s horrible that she never felt wanted by her parents and sis is 100% the one in the wrong here.

But I also believe that it’s not OPs responsibility to fill in for a second child because her sister is a bad parent.

It's astonishing she thinks you owe her the same luxury you provided for your children and that somehow her own parents and your mom think so as well! Instead of being the ones to reason sense into her, they seem to be the ones who put the delusion in her head! You do not owe her a car and not even a welcome after she chose to destroy your son property who has done nothing to her and you and your husband who have loved her as a niece!
My grandparents took my aunts oldest son and my aunt kept her youngest. One use to be jealous she kept the other while the other was jealous my grandparents kept the other but both are content as they got older. They have no malice or ill will towards each other or the parents. Neither respect my aunt tho as she did/do drugs. Both deserved better as my grandparents handicapped him, he is so underdeveloped as far as independence! Very smart academically, all honors straight A student, never socialized outside of gaming so very awkward socially but can't even ride a bike, make a sandwich,22 and don't even take out the trash, never worked a day in his life. The other was very smart but due to absences, no haircuts or fitting nice clothes for school being bullied etc he lost interest early unfortunately, has practically dropped out of school, 18 now in the 10th grade, has worked a few after school jobs, street smart as my aunt had him in the streets with her, charming, no structure or discipline, no motivation or standard to meet etc. I hate what is becoming of both! If my grands had gotten him too at least once they seen he was suffering academically, he would have reached his potential and flourished all around and actually be doing great right now! He just needed the structure, discipline, proper clothing to confidently attend school which my grandparents would have given. He would be the success story having been given the good parts of both sides! I'm going to talk with him tomorrow to see what he has decided about his future as i told him is not too late to correct school and gave him options of getting these credits to graduate 2024, job core or military! Hopefully since he is 18 my aunt won't try to hold him back any longer for state assistance! Smh
