Kids
The New Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We took all the memories we shared
Stored them away in a place somewhere
Can you Remember how we used to fight
We were just children living happy lives

What happened to the films we used to watch
Remember how they made us scared a lot
What happened to the dreams we'd have at night
The dreams that we all thought would change our lives

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The New Division's song "Kids" discuss the loss of childhood innocence and how the memories of the past become distant as we grow older. The song begins with the line "We took all the memories we shared" implying that these memories were actively taken away, rather than simply fading away with time. The line "Stored them away in a place somewhere" characterises these memories as being physically stored away in a place only accessible by memory. The chorus of the song features nostalgic questions, such as "Can you remember how we used to fight? Were we just kids in a happy life?" which imply a longing for the simplicity of childhood, where fights with friends were the biggest challenge.

The second half of the song emphasises the specific elements of childhood that have been lost with time. The line "What happened to the films we used to watch? Remember how they made us scared a lot" highlights the lost thrill and terror of horror movies that were a common part of many teenagers' childhoods. The line "What happened to the dreams we'd have at night; The dreams that we all thought would change our lives" brings a feeling of disillusionment to the song, as the hopes and aspirations of childhood have seemingly not come true.

Ultimately, "Kids" is a song that reflects upon the inevitability of growing older and the loss of innocence that comes with it. The song's poignant lyrics combined with its dreamy, synth-laden composition make for a nostalgic and contemplative experience for listeners.

I heard this song on the radio once. I used shazam so I could remember it. Little did I know how much of an effect it would have on me. When it goes something like..."Took all the memories we shared,...stored them away somewhere." and "Can you remember when we used to fight? We were just children living happy lives." These get me in the feels overtime.
I wasn't too close with my brother when I was young because I was immature and he was 6 years older. As I got into my young teens we became closer and closer until I decided to try for the military at 23. I got called into the master sergeants office so he could tell me that my brother passed away. This song is a bit bittersweet as it makes me cry but makes me also remember the good times of us getting close as the years went on.
Never underestimate the small and seemingly meaningless moments.
