Lament
The New York Room Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As dusk grows cold
And the sky comes forth,
Echoes long and low
The piercing thorns of dawn
Have now all gone away

Bathe me in darkness
Beneath thy veil
Darker, darker
Deep within: further, further

Oh, dark night
Hold me close
Tight in your arms
Don't leave me alone
Plagued with doubt and woe
To you I've come alone
Weary and worn with scorn

Bathe me in darkness
Beneath thy veil
Darker, darker
Deep within: further, further

As dawn blurs, unfurls and warms
And the sky opens once more
In its light, I am more alone

Only to beckon again the night
And wait for day to darken and die

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The New York Room's song Lament are deeply introspective and intense, as they reflect upon the singer's feelings of loneliness, despair and the need to escape the bright and painful daylight. The first stanza describes the shift from dusk to dawn and the piercing thorns of dawn disappearing, leaving behind a sense of darkness and emptiness. The singer then asks to be 'bathed in darkness' and taken deeper within it, as if the only way to find peace and calm is to be surrounded by darkness.

The second stanza repeats the request for darkness, but this time to be held close by the 'dark night' and not left alone. The singer seems to be plagued by 'doubt and woe' and seeks refuge from this pain by escaping into the shadows. The ending lines of the stanza emphasize the singer's weariness and exhaustion with life, as they arrive at the doorstep of the dark night alone and scorned.

The final stanza repeats the theme of day turning into night and the relief that the night brings. The singer finds themselves even more alone in the daylight, but eagerly awaits the return of the night to once again envelop them in darkness. The lyrics to Lament are filled with a sense of longing and need for the comfort that only darkness and the night can provide.
