Call Me
The Norman Luboff Choir & the Melachrino Strings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Call me irresponsible
Call me unreliable
Throw in undependable, too

Do my foolish alibis bore you?
Well, I'm not too clever, I
I just adore you
So, call me unpredictable
Tell me I'm impractical
Rainbows, I'm inclined to pursue

Call me irresponsible
Yes, I'm unreliable
But it's undeniably true
That I'm irresponsibly mad for you

Do my foolish alibis bore you?
Girl, I'm not too clever, I
I just adore you

Call me unpredictable
Tell me that I'm so impractical
Rainbows, I'm inclined to pursue

Go ahead, call me irresponsible
Yes, I'm unreliable
But it's undeniably true
I'm irresponsibly mad for you

You know it's true
Oh, baby, it's true

Overall Meaning

The song "Call Me" by The Norman Luboff Choir & the Melachrino Strings, features lyrics that describe a person who acknowledges that they may be viewed as irresponsible, unreliable, and undependable, but they are unapologetically in love with someone. The lyrics refer to their "foolish alibis" and lack of cleverness, which may bore their lover, but the person confesses that they simply adore them. Despite their flaws, the singer is unpredictable, impractical, and pursues rainbows, all in the name of love for their significant other. They are "irresponsibly mad" for them, and they boldly declare that their love is undeniable.

The singer's self-awareness of their flaws makes them vulnerable and relatable. They do not try to hide or make excuses for their shortcomings; instead, they celebrate their love for their partner, flaws and all. The lyrics highlight how love can make people act in an unpredictable and unusual manner, but that does not diminish the authenticity or intensity of their feelings.

Overall, the song can be interpreted as an ode to the unbridled and irrational nature of love.

What a wonderful post! So happy to just let it run its full 3 hours. I’m from a family of professional singers and we all sang on Norman’s albums over the years. My Dad, Bill Lee, was Norm’s favorite soloist. We were all family friends too, great memories of times spent together. Thank you!

Back when I was in college at NCSU sometime in the mid 60s (graduated in '66) The Norman Luboff Choir was singing "Laura" just as an actual train was passing through the campus & the choir smiled big time but never changed the sound of the song at all! What a precious time & what professionals...

Such nice music unlike some of today's, thanks for posting this and sharing in music that takes you back to better times when the lyrics were understandable and meant something.
