Markus and Michael Acher formed the group together with Martin Messerschmidt in Weilheim, near Munich. In 1990 they recorded their self-titled debut The Notwist, a grunge-metal oriented LP. 1992 saw the release of Nook, which has an indie rock sound, while their 1995 album 12 contains their first flirtation with electronica. Martin Gretschmann (aka Console) joined the group in 1997. Shrink, released in 1998, is a jazz-electro-rock album. The album Neon Golden (released in 2002) put them on the map for American listeners.
In 2003 the band started their own record label Alien Transistor and released a soundtrack for the movie Lichter by Hans-Christian Schmid. On September, 6th 2004 the EP Solo Swim came out, a collaboration between The Notwist, Console and Klimek, which is also the soundtrack for the documentary Kanalschwimmer by Jörg Adolph. Both EPs are only available on vinyl as is the latest EP by Rayon (Markus Acher), released in spring 2006.
Some of The Notwist's songs have been remixed by Four Tet, Manitoba, Console, Loopspool, and others. Singer Markus Acher collaborated with Anticon rapper/producer Alias on the song Unseen Sights.
The Notwist recently formed a supergroup with Themselves named 13 & God, whose eponymous debut was released in 2005. Other acts in which members of The Notwist are participating include Village of Savoonga, Tied & Tickled Trio, Lali Puna, Ms. John Soda, Potawatomi, Alles wie Groß, Ogonjok, Rayon, 3 Shades of Blues, Hometrainer, Bolzplatz Heroes, Alien Ensemble, and Schweisser.
In 2006, Messerschmitt left the band on friendly terms. Markus Acher stated that "it just didn't work anymore".
The Devil, You + Me and was released in Europe in May, 2008. On June 17, 2008 the album was released in North America on Domino Records.
2014 saw the release of Close to the Glass released in the US on Sub-Pop.

Johnny
The Notwist Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain't lonely
Mary counts the walls
Knows he tires easily
Johnny thinks the world would be right
If it could buy truth from him
But she made her bed
Even when the chance was slim
Johnny says he's willing to learn
When he decides he's a fool
Johnny says he'll live anywhere
When he earns to time
Mary combs her hair
Says she should be used to it
Mary always hedges her bets
She never knows what to think
She says that he still acts
Like he is being discovered
Scared that he'll be caught
Without a second thought
Running around
Johnny feels he's wasting his breath
Trying to talk sense to her
Mary says he's lacking a real
Sense of proportion
So she combs her hair
Knows he tires easily
Johnny's always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain't lonely
Mary counts the walls
Says she should be used to it
Johnny's always running around
Running around
The Notwist's song Johnny & Mary is a poignant depiction of a relationship between two people who are struggling to communicate with each other. Johnny is searching for certainty and validation from the world around him, hoping that it will alleviate his loneliness. Mary, on the other hand, is more introspective and aware of the limitations of their relationship. She can see that Johnny is fickle and changes his mind often, but still remains committed to him even when the odds are against them. Both characters are torn between their desire for security and their fear of being caught without it.
The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, with Johnny searching for reassurance that he is not alone. He needs others to confirm his existence and his place in the world. Mary is more practical, aware of Johnny's limitations, but still committed to him despite his flaws. The second verse delves deeper into their dynamic, with Mary acknowledging Johnny's fickleness and her own uncertainty about their relationship. She fears that he will be caught without a second thought, but still maintains hope that they can work it out.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of tension and unfulfilled desires. Johnny and Mary are both trying to find their way in the world, but are constrained by their own fears and insecurities. The song is a haunting reminder of how difficult it can be to communicate with those we love and how hard it is to find meaning and purpose in life.
