1. Mid 60s garage rock band from Minneapolis, MN. They released the famous "The Crusher" 45 single on Parrot Records in 1964. The b-side was "take 7". The Crusher 45 was reissued as an EP in 1999 by Norton Records, adding the previously unreleased tracks "On The Road Again" and "My Sin Is My Pride!".
"The Crusher" is about professional wrestler, Reginald "The Crusher" Lisowski from Milwaukee, WI. It peaked at #88 on the US Billboard Charts.
2. Mid '60s Psych-Garage band from Dallas who scored a regional hit in 1965 with their psychedelic rock single "William Junior" b/w "And It's Time". Real Texas garage rock classic! A singles compilation has been released by Dragon Street Records in TX. The photos that are featured here are primarily of the Texas band "The Novas" and NOT the MN band that recorded "The Crusher". The Texas band "The Novas" will be performing at South By Southwest 2010 on Saturday, March 20th at 9:30 PM at The Continental Club in Austin, TX. I'm the bass player in the Texas band. Do the hammer lock, a do the hammer lock
Raid, do the hammer lock, you turkey necks
Yeah, do the hammer lock, a do the hammer lock
Everybody's doing it
Raid
Do the eye gouge yeah, do the eye gouge
Yeah, do the eye gouge, a do the eye gouge
Everybody's doing it
Raid
Okay, you turkey necks, gather 'round
Raid let me show you how to do the crusher
If you don't learn it now, I'm gonna get you in the ring
Raid
Okay, you take your fist and put it on your waist
And if you don't, you're gonna be a disgrace
And then you squeeze your partner's head just below the face
Raid
Do the crusher, do the crusher
Raid, do the crusher, you turkey necks
Yeah, do the crusher, a do the crusher
Everybody do it now
Raid
The Novas's song "Crusher" has a humorous and lighthearted tone, but it also hints at the violent nature of professional wrestling. "Raid" is the repeated call to action encouraging the listener to participate in the various wrestling moves, such as the "hammer lock" and "eye gouge." These moves are typically used to subdue or hurt an opponent, but the lyrics suggest that they are being used for entertainment and as a way to bond with others who enjoy wrestling. The chorus encourages everyone to participate in the "crusher," which involves placing your fist on your waist and squeezing your partner's head below the face.
The lyrics reflect the cultural phenomenon of professional wrestling in the mid-1960s when the song was originally released. It was a time when professional wrestling was growing in popularity, and more people were tuning in to watch it on television. The Novas's song captures the excitement and the theatrics of professional wrestling, with all the dramatic posturing and over-the-top moves. The lyrics also show a sense of camaraderie among the wrestlers and their fans, as they come together to share the experience of watching and participating in the action.
Overall, "Crusher" by The Novas is a fun, energetic song that captures the spirit of professional wrestling of the time. It celebrates the athleticism, showmanship, and camaraderie of the wrestlers and their fans, while also hinting at the violence and danger that is part of the sport.
