Now
The O Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Five days on the freeway
Riding shotgun with you
Two hearts in the fast lane
We had big dreams in blue

Playing Sweet Child O' Mine
And I still feel that line
Where are you now?
Where are you now?

Hey, it's been too long
Too long to go, my love
Where did we go wrong?
Too late to turn around
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Hey, it's been too long

You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head

Some days I can feel it
But the feeling ain't all blue
You got me believing
One day you gotta come through

Lost in these city lights
'Cause I can't sleep tonight
Where are you now?
Where are you now?

Hey, it's been too long
Too long to go, my love
Where did we go wrong?
Too late to turn around
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Hey, it's been too long

You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
You're just like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head

You're just like my favorite going 'round and 'round my head
Like my favorite song going 'round and 'round my head

You're just like a song going 'round and 'round, going round in my head
Like my favorite song going, going in my head

Overall Meaning

The song "Now" by The O's seems to be about a failed relationship that could have been something great if only one party had not messed it up. The lyrics express regret from the singer's perspective and the desire for what could have been. The chorus is particularly poignant, where the singer repeats the phrase "Maybe we would be in love right now" several times, as if to drive home the point that there was a missed opportunity.

The first verse hints at the promise of the relationship. The singer thought that the person had something special, a trait that could lead to a heart attack (presumably in a good way). They had potential together, but the singer began to notice flaws and things that the other person was lacking. The second verse is even more damning, with the singer calling out the other person's lack of self-control, poor manners, and embarrassing behavior.

The song builds to a climax in the rap section where the singer reveals that they know who the other person is currently sleeping with. There is a palpable sense of anger and betrayal in the words, and the singer seems hurt by the betrayal. In the end, the singer is resigned to the fact that the fairytale ending they imagined is not going to happen. The song is both sad and empowering, a reminder that sometimes it's better to let go of what could have been and focus on what could be.
