Blue Christmas
The Oak Ridge Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll have a blue
Christmas without you
And I'll be so blue
Just thinking about you.
Decorations of red
On a green Christmas tree
Won't mean a thing dear
If you're not here with me.

Then when the Blue
Snowflakes start fallin'
That's when those blue
Memories are calling
You'll be doing all right
With your Christmas of white
But I'll have a blue, blue Christmas.

Decorations of red
On a green Christmas tree
Won't mean a thing dear,
If you're not here with me.

Then when the Blue
Snowflakes start fallin'
That's when those blue
Memories are calling
You'll be doing all right
With your Christmas of white
But I'll have a blue, blue Christmas.

But I'll have a blue, blue Christmas...

Overall Meaning

The Oak Ridge Boy's song "Blue Christmas" is a classic holiday tune that speaks to the loneliness and melancholy that can come from spending Christmas alone or without a loved one. The lyrics convey the message that the traditional symbols of the holiday season, such as a green Christmas tree with red decorations, don't hold the same meaning if the person you care about isn't there to share them with. The song's central theme is the overwhelming sense of sadness and desolation that can be felt during the holiday season, particularly if you are missing someone important.

The lyrics start by stating that the singer will have a blue Christmas without their loved one and that just thinking about them will make them feel blue. They go on to describe the typical Christmas decorations, which are usually red and green, and point out that without their loved one there to share it with, those symbols won't hold the same meaning. As the blue snowflakes start to fall, the singer thinks about the sweet memories they shared with their loved one, which makes them feel even more alone. The song ends by acknowledging that even though their loved one may be doing okay on their own, the singer will still have a blue Christmas.

Overall, "Blue Christmas" is a poignant reminder that not everyone experiences the holidays in the same way. While for some, Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, for others it can be a difficult and lonely time. The song's message is a reminder to be empathetic and kind to those who may be struggling during the holiday season, and to remember that the true meaning of the holidays is about coming together to show love and support to one another.

on King Jesus

There are rumors that this was created in a recording studio. I think it's possible, but I can remember buying the album in 1974 just to listen to the live version of King Jesus. I still have the album after 50 years. Ahh, you're in store for a great singin' tonight. . . is a precious memory I have of that album.
