Christmas
The Offspring Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Christmas) The snow's coming down
(Christmas) I'm watching it fall
(Christmas) Lots of people around
(Christmas) Baby, please come home

(Christmas) The church bells in town
(Christmas) All ringing in song
(Christmas) Full of happy sounds
(Christmas) Baby, please come home

They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

(Christmas) Pretty lights on the tree
(Christmas) I'm watching them shine
(Christmas) You should be here with me
(Christmas) Baby, please come home

Baby, please come home
Oh, baby, please come home

They're singing "Deck The Halls"
It's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

(Christmas) If there was a way
(Christmas) I'd hold back this tear
(Christmas) But it's Christmas day
(Please) Please (please), please
(Please) Please (please), please
(Please) Please (please), please
(Please) Baby, please come home

(Christmas) Baby, please come home
(Christmas) Baby, please come home
(Christmas) Baby, please come home
(Christmas) Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Babe, baby
Baby, please come home
Babe, baby
Baby, please come home
Babe, baby
Oh, baby, please come home
Babe, oh, baby
Oh, baby, please come home
Oh, babe, baby
Baby, please come home

Oh, babe, baby
Baby, please come home

Overall Meaning

"Christmas" by The Offspring is a cover of the original song by Darlene Love. The song talks about a yearning for a loved one to return home for Christmas, as the memories of Christmas past are hauntingly bittersweet. The lyrics are both nostalgic and melancholic, as they touch upon the pain of being alone during the holidays. The snowflakes falling, the bright lights on the tree, and the church bells ringing all contribute to the festive atmosphere, but without the presence of the person they miss, the celebration feels incomplete. The lines "But it's not like Christmas at all, cause I remember when you were here, and all the fun we had last year" sums up the essence of the song, as the artist recalls the happier times.

Moreover, the catchy chorus has become a Christmas classic over the years, covered by many artists following the original release. The Offspring adds a rock spin to the song, creating a modern rendition of this timeless tune. The yearning and plead in the vocals are a nod to the original song, but the interpretation is unique and worth listening to.
